Hi Geeks to go,

I posted a thread 4 days ago and have not had any replies.

I tried to go to the "waiting room" but it said it had been moved.

I have constant popups and have run AVG and Superanti spy and although it comes up threats (adware) it is just the popups that i have, not the root of the problem.

Also my computer is very, very slow.

Can you please have a look at my hijackthis log and any advice will be greatfully appreciated.

Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

For your slow computer... as I can see from your log, I do see what is causing the popups, but this infection doesn't really slow down your computer.
But you do have McAfee installed and I know McAfee causes a huge system slowdown.

Hi,

Yes, it may be a good idea to uninstall McAfee and install another one.
Look in my signature below under Antivirus for the ones I recommend.
For example, Avira Antivirus is a great free Antivirus.
Please make sure your McAfee is uninstalled first before you install a new Antivirus. So reboot after uninstalling McAfee.

But first... Go to start > controlpanel > software > add/remove programs and uninstall ContextTool

Reboot afterwards.

After reboot, delete next folder if still present:

C:\Program Files\ContextTool

Then post a new HijackThislog in your next reply.

Hi,

I removed Context Tool from my add/remove programs and so far I havent had any popups.

I wasnt sure what you meant by "if its still there then C:\ProgramFiles\context tool. I only know the basics of computing.

Actually when I get popups it says in bottom right hand corner "ad served by context tool".

I havent changed my antivirus as yet, will do once I sort this out.

Computer still is very slow.

I meant to look if next folder still exists after uninstalling ContextTool:

C:\Program Files\ContextTool

If it's still present, then delete it.
This folder is in your "C:\Program Files" Folder with the name ContextTool.
If you can't find it there, don't worry

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O2 - BHO: Media Holding Enterprises, LLC - {0D39A900-0F3A-4C29-A254-3E65244FDC34} - C:\Program Files\ContextTool\ContextTool-2.dll (file missing)

Hi,

I checked those 2 and fix checked them.

So far no popups -yay.

Computer is still a little slow, I am in the process of removing Mcafee and have just downloaded avira antivirus.
Mcafee will be gone after reboot.

Also I have read on these forums about java and that old versions can cause problems. I have at the moment two orange updates in my system tray to update, can you advise me if I should update them and delete older ones. I'm not even sure what java is.

Will let you know tomorrow how things are going.

Hi,

Computer is still a little slow, I am in the process of removing Mcafee and have just downloaded avira antivirus.
Mcafee will be gone after reboot.

Uninstalling McAfee and installing a new Antivirus will already make a big difference
I see you already installed Avira while you are in the process of uninstalling McAfee. You had to uninstall McAfee first and then reboot.
In anyway, please reboot now so McAfee can proceed with the uninstall.

Also I have read on these forums about java and that old versions can cause problems. I have at the moment two orange updates in my system tray to update, can you advise me if I should update them and delete older ones. I'm not even sure what java is.

Correct, you're one version behind, but this version is not vulnerable. Anyway, I still recommend you update it anyway, so..
Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3.
• Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3".
• Click the "Download" button to the right.
• Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
  • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
  • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Hi,

I have updated Java and removed old versions.

I have done a scan with avira and it shows "virus/unwanted program" TR/Agent.90112.G, it is in quarantine. Is that a trojan and is it now gone or is it just a tracking cookie from a popup I had before.

Will attach virus report. There were 2 warnings, files that could not be opened.

Is it safe to use my banking websites? With the problem that I had with context tool was anyone able to hack into my computer.

Computer is running ok speed wise.

Is there anything I can do to make it quicker?

Will attach hijackthislog.

Hi,

What Avira found was just a leftover in your System Restore points, but that one is deleted now.

With the problem that I had with context tool was anyone able to hack into my computer.

No, you were lucky here. This infection mainly displayed advertisements.

Computer is running ok speed wise.

Is there anything I can do to make it quicker?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply to my questions.

I had a look at your tips etc and removed temp files and cookies etc. Computer is running much better.

I think that my computer is 3 years old now that it is not a high MB.

Also I wasn't aware that you should have an antivirus program and an antispyware, I now have both and will check them reguarly.

I cant thank you enough for helping me out with my computer problems.
