:tazz: [FONT=Arial][SIZE=1]Hope you can help. I worked through your instructions before posting. Spybot found some problems and fixed them. I do update with Windows update and probably downloaded SP2 after being infected with something bad. I am not very computer literate but can follow instructions. Thanks in advance. I don't see anything real bad in your log. We can eliminate some unnecessary stuff and see if that helps. If you see something you use regularly listed below, skip it and let me know.

Pieter, Thank you for your reply. I started to do as you suggested then couldn't connect through my dial-up to AOL. I Have called the telephone company and they are going to send out a repair tech. Probably should wait until I can get a clean phone connection before proceeding. I will post my new Hijack This after my phone line is repaired. Thanks again, Cward

I'm sorry, but I don't fully understand. Did that happen after you did part of the fix or before you got a chance to start?

If you think you fixed something too much in HijackThis under Config > Backups you can restore the fixed items

I am posting this quickly - I was able to get connected to the Internet for a while...

I did as you suggested. When I hit fix checked it started then stopped at 04 Global Startup and this error popped up: "Unexpected error occurred. Error #52 (bad file name or number) in SubGetLongPath (?.exe)
Please send a report to [email protected], mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have. This message has been copied to your clipboard."
I checked ok and the cleanup finished.

My internet problem is the phone line. It has happened before and is intermittent. Just another hassle... LOL It is working okay at the moment.

I was hoping that getting rid of some unnecessary AOL and Windows startups would improve your performance.

Can you see if the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup is empty?

If not let me know what you find.

Can you see if the folder C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup is empty? Yes, it it empty.

I am downloading BootVis. Is it easy to figure out how to use it?

I forgot to ask if this error was anything I need to worry about?

"Unexpected error occurred. Error #52 (bad file name or number) in SubGetLongPath (?.exe)

I have bootvis installed. What steps do I need to do?

I guess I will read the help info on BootVis. What should I be looking for that might slow things down?

You can forget about the HijackThis error. I had you check in the Startups folder to see if anything went wrong when it gave you that error.
It probably stumbled over what was listed as the question mark in:
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Works Calendar Reminders.lnk = ?

Metallica / Pieter: I found the info on Bootvis and ran it and optimized. It seemed a bit faster! One problem is probably the AOL takes too long to load, maybe? Anyway, I want to thank you and Geek to Go!
Question: which spyware programs should I use and how often should I scan? I downloaded MS Antispyware Beta, is that a good one? Also do I need Winpatrol running all the time?
This is a great service and you did a fine job walking me through all the steps to a healthier computer.

Hi cward,

Follow the link in my signature for spyware removal and prevention.

Personally I scan after every update, but that's partly because I want to check if they added the new items I sent in and if they didn't add any legitimate items by accident.

Use only one resident spyware protection (WinPatrol is good) and choose the two scanners you like best. MSAS and the scanner AOL offers (Aluria) for example. Unfortunately the best scanners at this moment get at best only 80% of the regular spyware, so you will need at least two to cover the basics.

Glad we could help and I really enjoy helping someone with a clean computer on occasion. :tazz:
