Do I want just the LAN driver or the LAN driver combo?
Sorry, too sleepy to think tonight.

I guess upon looking at it more closely, I'd go with the second one first. If that one doesn't work out for you, try the first one.

Wow - wish I'd noticed your reminder to simple follow the instructions on the page with the downloads!!! I spent too much time looking around trying to figure it myself! DUH!

So I right click and my option is Extract here. It then says double click on Setup.exe . . . I'm looking for that now. I'm going to assume they mean the WinSetup.exe (that I found when I just double clicked on the Zipped file).

Great, in ZipGenius - new window reads, "You are trying to preveiw a suspected file but you don't have set a path to perform an antivurus sofware (see HELP). Do yo REALLY want to continue?" Kinda scard me. I went back to regular folder went into Vista_XP_Srv2003 . . . >x86>winsetup icon and double clicked . . . new window, "Can not find proper NIC. click OK to end program." I'm assuming I'm supposed to go into x86 instead of x64.

Since I hit a dead end there I went back to ZipGenius window and told it to go ahead and continued at that "suspected file". Now the WinSetup window reads, "Can not find any inf files!"

I feel like I'm doing something wrong. What next?

Thanks for your time and help.

If I am understanding you correctly, I think the problem is that you have opened the setup file from within the zip file, rather than the one that was extracted. You will need to find the file that was extracted and open that instead. Basically, once you extract the files, you are completely finished working with the zip file.

OK - I go to my Download folder>the Rhine Driver folder where I put the Zip file. I unzipped the file. Now of Types I have File Folders. I go to Vista_XP . . . > I go into X86 (correct?)> double click WinSetup Application - - I get the WinSetup window reading, "Can not find proper NIC, click OK to end program."

Let's see - I removed Ethernet Adapter then restarted. Computer didn't detect anything.

Went to Contol Panel>Install New Hardware - auto didn't detect anything. Think I went to manual. Anyway it seemed to be searching for a driver or wanting me to point it to a driver. It will automatically jump to the "Insert Disk" part, I'll click OK and get the Insert Disk window where I can browse. Can't find where the driver is located. Don't think that matters because the "Insert Disk" windows reads, "The file "netvt.cat" on Network Adapter source disk cannot be found."
I'm not sure what I'm doing. Selecting, hitting Cancel, it's copying files. Tells me I have a newer version than the one I'm copying - vtcp.386 v.4.10.2223 - I'm keeping the newer version. Some more cancelling - it read that all files are finished being copied. I'll Restart. Control>System>Device - no ethernet adapter.
I'm down for the night.
Next??
Is my Network card gone?

MUCH thanks for your time and thoughts!

Thanks for the detailed update. It looks like we may not be able to get that version of the driver to install, from what you are telling me. Can you try the other driver that is listed in the page I previously posted? Let me know if you have any better luck or not. I apologize that we are not able to come to a clear resolution.

Regards,

I opened the vt6105 . . . zip file, well had it extract into a folder. From the four zip files that showed - I extracted the zip file that had 'driver' in the name. Then I opened the regular File Folder "Windows", then "X86", double clicked the WinSetup application. I now get the WinSetup window readying, "Can not find proper NIC, click OK to exit program."

Please note - I had gone - Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager - looking for Ethernet Adapter. Didn't see it, selected something like Refresh, it then showed up. Things didn't work though. In Device Manager I removed the adapter, restarted and it didn't indicate it found any new hardware on Startup. Tried to Add New Hardware but didn't get anything going. SOOOOO - ethernet adapter software has been removed and not reinstalled. Could that be why is does not find proper NIC?

By the way - is my NIC "built into" my motherboard?? If it is, can a stand alone NIC work? What info do I need to find one that will work for me?

http://h10025.www1.h...n...=en&lang=en
I went into Command > PING 127.0.0.1 All pings failed - transmit failed, error code 10043.
In Network - Ethernet Adapter still shows (After I removed it??) As far as checking bindings - this HP site says that after TCP/IP there should be the name of the adapter. Both of my TCP/IP protocols do NOT have an adapter name. Oops, read more - name won't show if only one NIC and no dial up adapter.
Command>ipconfig - IP Configurational Fatal Error - Cannot read IP configuration.

What next?

I believe the NIC card is integrated. Could you try following the steps listed in the following Microsoft KB and see if it helps:

Your recommended site >> - http://support.micro...b;EN-US;q286748 - "Fatal Error" Error Message Occurs When You Run WINIPCFG << I felt I should check how to save the Registry so I took their link >> - http://support.micro...b/256986/EN-US/ - Windows registry information for advanced users - << it was just that! For ADVANCED users! I did another search and found >>- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256419 - How to Back Up the Registry in Windows 98 and Windows Millennium Edition<< To me it seemed a lot simpler to do the Start>Run>scanregw -
where upon I discovered some auto program had already backed up the Registry today!

Now to follow the Error page info - Wait - if I've removed (software, not physical) the adapter then the TCP/IP will not be bound to anything right? I won't see any bindings for the TCP/IP to the adapter? I can't follow that page's suggestions.

I looked and it appears I do have an seperate NIC. I plug the ethernet into one of those lower bays. I did notice the light by the ethernet plug is lit - if that indicate the NIC is still functioning.

By the way - I think I've kept forgetting to mention - I am quite sure that early on in this adventure I did use Registry Mechanic or something because I remember some warning about having a program automatically fix the Registry. If it was in Reg Mech I'm rather sure I backed it up first. After the scan I'm sure I told it to go ahead and fix any errors.

I haven't tried to reinstall Adapter. I don't know how to do it either. I do plan to open the case, remove NIC, power up, power down, clean connections then reinstall NIC to see if that does any good. I'll report back to here afterwards.

OK that sounds good. If you did use Registry Mechanic to fix the problem, it should have saved a backup which you can restore back into the registry.

Hmmm, Adapter shows in System but not in Network?? Anyway - C>Windows>Sysbckup - Registry appears to have 5 backups saved (rb001 - 5 and one rbbad) The oldest is 12/11, the bad 11/16. Oh well, I was kinda hoping one might be way old and might be before my problems.

OK - I'll admit, I'm way out beyond my understanding! Is there anything else I need to try or should I just get another NIC?

What bothers me is ALMOST every card will work? OR make sure it has Win98 drivers! Is it just me or is there really not anywhere online for "how to choose a NIC/(any of the other names)"? Heck, I can't even find much when I just look for the card - as in buying! I've found a few at an online biz that Emails me a lot but even there I don't get enough specs. From reviews I saw about a card being for 98SE and up. Most things I see for sale in stores are for 98SE and up! How can I find one for W98? I feel that I've searched online a good bit and correctly. I'll take any help I can get!

LOOOOOOONG story short - I'm putting the NIC in. The replacement looks a lot different. I can attach/include photos if needed. I'll go ahead and put it in though.

Continue here or start new thread?
