Hello. I have found out that many here know what there talking about, I am building a computer and I would like any advice possible. Please let me know if I'm missing anything, what is a bad choice, or what you might recommend.

I may not have the "detailed" name for each part.... sorry, I will get it if needed.

Case = LIAN LI PC-65B Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail
Power = Thermaltake W0093RU ATX 12V 2.0 Version 500W Power Supply 115/230 V UL, CUL, TUV, FCC, and CB - Retail
Mother Board = I don't know yet.
Processor = I don't know yet.
Memory = I don't know yet.
Video =XFX 8800GTX 512
HD =I don't know yet.
Disc Drive 1 = I don't know yet.
Disc Drive 2 = I don't know yet.
Cooling = Fans
Audio = Sound Blaster Xfi Xtreame Audio 24bit pci

Running XP Pro.

Like I said I know very little about this... any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, any advice for the things I have listed as "I don't know yet".

Thanks in advance,
-Kais3r

Hi Kais3r...

What are you planning on using this machine for? Is it for gaming? Genera purpose? Knowing what it will be used for will really help us help you design a platform that will do what you want it to do.

I would recommend an Intel build as they are the best right now. Also what is your budget for this build this way I can know my limits. Also there is no such thing as a XFX 8800GTX 512 there is a 768MB version, I think you mean an 8600 which I don't recommend.

The Lian-Li cases are excellent quality, but very expensive IMO. I would agree with SOORENA, at the moment an Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad would fit the bill nicely. If you aren't planning on running SLI video cards (one 8800GTX will be plenty for most builds), then I recommend grabbing a P35 chipset motherboard, I recently purchased the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3 motherboard, Intel Core 2 Duo E6750, and GeIL 2x1GB Ultra RAM and I'm very happy with it.

Audio = Sound Blaster Xfi Xtreame Audio 24bit pci

These sound cards are good but you would probably be fine with the stock audio that comes with the motherboard and ave some dough.

If this build is not a priority like "I need it for the holidays", I might wait like 2 months, January 2008. Intel and AMD are releasing some new processors, there is talk of Nvidia releasing a new GPU in January 2008 that will outperform the 8800 Ultra and ATI will be releasing some new cards too, and some better DDR3 RAM will be released by a couple of companies.

I will think about not getting the sound blaster if I could get much better other things.

OK thanks for the advice, I will wait till January 08

Oh if your budget is only $1,000 then I would buy now. Those products that are coming out are probably going to be expensive and will probably go somewhere in the $2Ks for a build. The 8800GTX and Sound Blaster Xfi Xtreame sound card that you were thinking of getting made me think that this was going to be a higher budget PC.

PS: If you still want to stay on the cheaper side I would raise your budget to $1,500, if possible, so the PC will last a while. An extra $500 will extend the use/life of the PC a lot.

If you buy now for a $1,000-$1,500 price range I would go with a:

650W PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E6750
8800GT
2GB of high quality DDR2 gaming RAM
7,200RPM Hard Drive (Min 150GB)

I agree with the Intel build you might want to check out some of the bare bones that tiger direct or Newegg has, best thing is for video card anything from the 7950 and above will work, I can actually smoke some of the 8800 cards with my 7950, as far as MB I too like the newer boards (P35 chipset motherboard) I have the asus P5KC and love it with dual core processors, sound you actually for now get by with basic sound , put the fastest Processor and most memory if xp like 2 gig be enough . hard drive personal choice one of my favorites are the sata drive like the WD Raptor drives I run dual 150 GB drives that 10,000 RPm with the 16 MB cache on drive they are fast .
Just do your research there are so many choices out there and every one will have there own preference. I can tell you my set up will cost far above what you spending but by no means make it any better .
My current set up:
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 Kentsfield 3.0GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor
Cooler Master Desperado 830 ATX Full Tower Case
Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFDRTL 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
Western Digital Raptor X WD1500AHFDRTL 150GB 10,000 RPM 16MB Cache Serial ATA150 Hard Drive
CORSAIR XMS2 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

ASUS P5KC LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
I use the sound and net card built on MB,

XFX PVT71JYPF4 GeForce 7950GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card
Cooler Master Desperado 830 ATX Full Tower Case
OCZ GameXStream 850-Watt Power Supply

I have decided to just save the money on the soundcard and get the basic one. Then I will have more money to spend on other things. I'm sorry but I just cant go more then $1000.

Lol, your CPU alone is over his budget. If you want a high end PC I would suggest getting a high DX9 card for now and then upgrade later on. The E6750 CPU is very cheap now and so is the EVGA 680i mobo. If you are not planning on overclocking I recommend getting just a normal mobo to save some cash.

I can actually smoke some of the 8800 cards with my 7950

??? Do you mean smoke some of the 8600 cards because the 7950 comes nowhere close to any of the 8800s?

Edit: @Soorena I would go with a 8800GT better performance, less money, and less power requirements. And you wold probably be fine with a 650W PSU and save some money.
