First of all sorry about reposting on this issue. I did a search on it but the problem was I found TOO MUCH information and I couldn't make heads or tails of it so I was hoping someone could guide me through in steps.

I also think its worth mentioning that most of the other people's problems seemed to occur after some kind of hardware change/upgrade, but mine just started suddenly this morning after working perfectly well yesterday! It says to hit ctrl+alt+dlt to reboot but it just comes up the same every time =(

So far I've tried restetting CMOS by switching the jumper (taking out battery seemed redundant) and I ATTEMPTED to boot from my XP installation CD, but after "hit any key to boot from CD" it went to a blank screen. Also, I don't have a Floppy drive so making a boot diskette seems out. Although I did have a USB floppy drive at one point...not sure where it is or if it works, but I could look if it is useful.

I know everybody loves their data but I desperately don't want to lose all my family pictures so if any suggestion is going to lead to a remformatted HD or some other form of data loss please let me know if there is a way to get my things off first. Thanks so much.

If this was my machine, i would try another boot device. replace the dvd rom, maybe you can 'borrow' one from a friend :)

also have you tried another cd to see if yours is maybe scratched?

OK...few questions....

What should I try booting with?

What does the DVD ROM have to do with any of it?

The CD seems ok...Its been in a case since I initially used it to install windows over 2 years ago, but I guess I can't be certain.

The DVD Drive or CD-Rom drive, depending on what you use, might be faulty. Although this seems a bit drastic, that's what i would do. You've already tried resetting the CMOS so i am presuming [not good thing to do] that you know how to change a cd drive? Try narrowing down your options, your pc also doesn't boot so how are you getting onto these forums? Try the windows cd in that device, unless it's an internet cafe or something like that.

When did it say "Hit control + Alt + Del to reboot"?

OK, I suppose I should back up a bit.

When I turned on my computer it went through the intial stages of booting but after I hit F1 and it updated the DMI pool (successfully) it would hang for a minute and then say "Disk Read Error Occurred Hit Ctrl+AltDlt to reboot." However, when I do that the same thing happens all over again. It was in RESPONSE to this that I changed the boot order to "CD First" and attempted to run from my XP install CD.

So I guess my CD/DVD drive could be faulty (and yes I can change one), but that's not the core issue.

And I'm getting onto the forums via my laptop which IS reading my XP install CD.

Antoher quick question....I know press the power on switch until shutdown is not advisable so what should I do when I get stuck on the "press ctrl+alt+del to restart" sequence if I want to turn it off instead?

Ok,

So we've eliminated the CD issue. Your CD is fine.

Hang Ten, my windows has just finished installing again after a bad malware attack. I will do a bit of research and get back you a.s.a.p. If you get help in the meantime, well and good :)

Tried Replacing the CMOS Battery because a friend had a similar experience, but I didn't have as much luck :)
I've read in some other places that it sounds like a problem with the Master Boot Record and gave some info on how to fix it by downloading a program to floppy disk and booting from it. Since I don't have a floppy drive I was wondering if I could do the same from a USB drive.

Guess I'll post in how my BIOS/CMOS is currenlty set to see if anything needs changing.
Should I use either (or both) of the “LOAD OPTIMIZED DEFAULTS” or “UPGRADE BIOS” options?
