Hello,

I still have alot of unwanted icons on my desktop that wont go and a little red circle with a white cross in it on my taskbar. Various messages pop up on it stating that a virus is on the system.

Here is the result of the HiJackThis scan

That's actually due to Hotoffers.

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file path listed below:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button.

Then run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log (so we can finish cleaning it up).

Please read these instructions carefully

*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field - make sure to get ALL of them!):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\guninst.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MediaAccX.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\guardian.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\hookDLL.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\netClient.dll
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\r_process.dll
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\MediaAccX.dll

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.

Post a new HiJackThis log (and let me know if the annoying icon is gone :tazz: )

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.hotoffers.info/ad0058/

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {696C008B-A5F0-4055-9882-B7CB71D87DEF} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mfplay.dll (file missing)

Close HiJackThis.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new notepad file. Change the "save as" type to "All Files". Save it as Unreg.bat on your Desktop.

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\System32\mfplay.dll

Locate Unreg.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it.

Reboot your computer and post a new HiJackThis log.

:tazz: It seems fine now. No annoying little icons covering the desktop and no WARNING messages popping up. Thankyou for taking the time to solve this problem for me. I really appreciate it. Keep up the good work.

I highly recommend going to http://www.microsoft.com and installing Service Pack 2 and any other critical updates!

Congratulations your log is clean! Great job on the clean up :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
