when i go into accessories to defrag it comes up with a block that tells me defrag wont work - Im new to this as well, so not totally sure of what Im doing

Use jkdefrag or other defrag programs.

Are you on a network at all? You might need administrator rights to run the defrag program. If not then use a downloadable defragger like latigid suggested above
