now to clean the infection:

Download Killbox
Click killbox.exe.
Select the option "Delete on reboot".
In the field "Full Path of File to Delete" copy and paste next:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll

Choose the option: "unregister dll before deleting"
Then press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it.
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot.. Click YES
When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES
If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.

Open notepad and copy and paste next in it:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D56A1203-1452-EBA1-7294-EE3377770000}]

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler]
"{D56A1203-1452-EBA1-7294-EE3377770000}"=-

Save this as fix.reg,
Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick on fix.reg and answer Yes when prompted to add the contents to the registry.

once you've done that, reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific.

I can right click and choose properties.
But there should be five tabs (Themes, Desktop etc), and I only got two of them; Sreen Saver and Settings. The desktop tab isn't available, therefore I can't change my wallpaper and still have the blue error wallpaper.

Okay, lets try this:

open up notepad (start > run > notepad) and paste the following text into the window

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]

change the "save as type" to "all files" and save it as fix.reg

double click on the file, and when it asks you if you want to merge the information with the registry, click "yes".

tell me if that fixes it.

Glad we could help :tazz:

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place?
