I was doing something in router settings and clicked on port something..., and typed in a number, since then i cannot connect to router with IE by typing router IP - it either automatically adds http:// and says it cannot display the webpage (if I hold ALT while pressing enter) or if i don't hold ALT it opens google search results for the router IP number i type in.

Is there some other way to connect to router or do i have to reset it or what?

Thanks in advance for any useful advice not including router reset...

well....without knowing WHAT you changed...it's pretty difficult to suggest too many things....IF you changed the IP of the router (possible) then in theory your router would reassign you an ip address in that range
while connected to the router press start, then run, then type "cmd" (without the quotes) then type "ipconfig /release" (again no quotes) then "ipconfig /renew" (no quotes)...then try to reconenct to the router

if that doesn't work.....well then you've got a step to do that you've barred anyone from mentioning..i'll let you figure that out

Thanks for your reply dsenette.

I'm sorry I didn't express my problem correctly, I am in fact connected to the internet via wireless (router) but just can't get into the router setup with typing the IP into IE address bar. Is there some other way to get into router setup?

Anyhow I tried your suggestion but still same s..t happens, IE just returns google results for the IP I type in. What is that all about? Is there any way to prevent that?

As a general rule of thumb if Internet Explorer wants to search the Internet for the IP address you're typing into it, its usually the wrong IP address to get into the router.

As a general rule, most routers use either http://10.0.0.2, http://192.168.1.1, http://192.168.0.1 or (rarely) http://172.16.0.1 or similar.

Thanks Neil, in the end I had to reset the router, so now it's o.k.

The main reason for all this mess was that I can't get connected to VPN and I tried to forward the port VPN is using or something like that. In the end my ISP informed me that I had to request low security as opposed to high security I have at the moment. They are not able to open up just this one port that VPN is using (I guess they just don't want to bother...).

Is there any way to be better secure from hack attacks when security is set to low and all ports open? Is there something I can do in router settings to increase security in this case?
