Hello - I am sorry but I am yet another Smitfraud victim. I have (much to my surprise and delight :tazz: ) been able to follow your excellent instructions on what to do before you post and have taken every step. I have also looked at your advice to others on this but I daredn't follow any of that just in case it doesn't apply to my problem. I am running Norton Anti-Virus, Ad-Aware and Spybot but I still have that nasty little message on my desktop and I can't connect properly to the Internet. Please can you help me? (I am using Windows 2000 professional) thank you!

:tazz: Hi there - no I'm not nagging as I know you are all really busy. Just wanted to know if I should follow advice that USETOBE gave to RWC. I am game to give it a go but didn't know if the advice varied as to which Windows package you are using??

I am so sorry but I haven't heard anything and (despite what you say!!) some people seem to be bumping ahead of me. I have tried the advice that bananafanafo gave to Amokdj re this virus on Windows 2000 and it seems to have got rid of the horrid box and given me back my desktop HOWEVER I still cannot make the links in my e-mails or external JAVA script links work - the computer just hangs and says it is not responding. Please can you help me - I am trying really hard to fix this problem myself and not nag but ..... I have run off another hijack for you.

Please please can you help me????

Sorry it took so long to get back to you! Since you have your desktop back you I removed that part, but please do the rest below.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following programs, if found:

Security IGuard
Virtual Maid
Search Maid

Exit Add/Remove Programs.

*IMPORTANT* CLICK THIS LINK TO LEARN HOW TO VIEW HIDDEN FILES

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field) MAKE SURE TO ENTER ALL FILE PATHS!:

C:\wp.exe
C:\wp.bmp
C:\WINNT\sites.ini
C:\WINNT\popuper.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\helper.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\intmonp.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\msmsgs.exe
C:\WINNT\System32\ole32vbs.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\msole32.exe

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts. If you recieve an error message "PendingRenameOperation...." and your computer doesn't restart, please restart it manually.

While your computer is restarting, tap the F8 key continually until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Make sure you can view hidden files.

Using Windows Explorer, delete the following (please do NOT try to find them by "search" because they will not show up that way)

FOLDERS to delete (in bold) if found:

C:\Program Files\Search Maid
C:\Program Files\Virtual Maid
C:\WINNT\System32\Log Files <-Where the trojans were hidden!
C:\Program Files\Security IGuard

Reboot into normal mode.

1.) Download the Hoster from HERE Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.

2.) Download: http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
To use: right-click and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

3.) Download, install, and run CleanUp!

4.) Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan.

Hi Bananafanafo - thanks for getting back to me.

Well I have followed all the steps.

Didn't find any of the folders to delete but everything ran smoothly until I tried to run the Panda online scan. Problems:

1. I can't click on links at the moment that open new windows or take me to other sites so I usually right click the link and then copy and paste shortcut in the address box.
2. Did this with the Panda link but when I tried to run the online scan from the button on their home page I got the following message at the bottom of the screen java script:pp(1,2,63);
3. The screen then frooze and I got the usual not responding message and I have to close down and start again
4. I went back into Panda again and tried to right click to copy shortcut but got the same message java script:pp(1,2,63); when I pasted that into the address bar. This also appeared as the link's properties when I checked.

So I couldn't run the online scan but I have done another hijack log.

I hope that you can help me resolve this one final problem. Thank you so much for your time. :tazz:

Ok, done!

Please print these instructions before continuing!

First, I need you to right click on the desktop and go to New > Folder - click on it and name it whatever you want. Locate HiJackThis.exe in this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ONE10HEP\HijackThis[1].exe

Right click on it and go to "cut", then go into the folder you just made on the desktop and click "paste". This is to ensure backups are saved and accessible.

Then, Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet, all other programs and windows are closed and run HijackThis again. Please place a checkmark next to the following items, if they exist, and then click "FIX CHECKED":

It looks good! Have you tried running ActiveScan now (btw, were you using Netscape or IE?)

Hi there!

:tazz: Well the links are working now and everything seems heaps better so thank you so much.

In answer to your questions:

1. I haven't run Panda Active Scan as I did read somewhere not to have two anti-virus active on your PC and I already have Norton - is that right?

2. I think that I am running Internet Explorer (judging by the toolbar) but I do have a Netscape icon (my son loaded that on ages ago). How can I tell which one I am running? Do you think that may cause a conflict?

Thanks again - I will definitely be donating - you have been a star!

Jen ;)

It is correct that it is not advised to have more than one anti-virus program downloaded to your computer. However, ActiveScan is an online virus scan - you don't download a program (just an ActiveX to run it). The reason we have people run the online virus scan is that malware can interfere with the virus scan that's actually downloaded on your computer. ActiveScan finds a bunch of adware remnants that I like to get rid of before officially calling a system clean. So, to answer you question the online virus scans do not interfere with anything. :tazz:

There is no problem with having them both I was just curious as to which one you were using when trying to run ActiveScan. Look at the very top of the window, does it say "Microsoft Internet Explorer"?
