Hi Bipolarjoe,
You can't really upgrade your D drive by combining more space to it but however you may be able to get more space by inserting a second drive and then dual booting Vista and XP or doing a clean format and then installing it in your D while using the new drive for storage. Or another way would be to buy a new drive, back up your things on it, format and install Vista on your D drive.

EDIT: I also recommend at least 1 gig of ram to run vista, but a good spec would need 2 gigs.

Drive D on Compaqs is reserved for your Recovery partition.
An easy solution before you upgrade to Vista is to burn your Recovery CDs using the software that comes with the computer, otherwise you'll lose the current pre-installed software forever. These will give you Drive D back. Then you can use said CDs to recover the system if you don't like Vista
