Downloaded DivX movie player, Mozilla Firefox and Adobe Reader 8 through some type of Google package Monday night. This morning my PC became crippled with constant pop-ups/error messages:

-psapi.dll is not a valid windows image
-shell.dll is not a valid windows image
-ehtray.exe - bad image
-hpsysdrv.exe - bad image
-kbd.exe - bad image
-googleupdater.exe - bad image
-Not a valid win32 [application?]
-Printer not activated error code - 20

Could not open docs or print, most icon images different, icons started disappearing from the desktop, computer very slow, not enough memory to even open the task manager or save this website as a favorite. Trend Micro Antivirus came up with nothing. I downloaded hijackthis, but wasn't able to initialize program/run (more pop-ups). Restarted computer, ran hijack this.

I apologize if the answer to this problem is already posted on this website. I'm not a computer expert and it's very hard to search with continuous pop-ups and a slow computer. I really appreciate any help with this - thank you!

Did any of the other spyware scanners find anything else besides the WildTangent and MediaPlex files? I don't see anything suspicious in the log file there and from your description, this is more of a Windows related issue than a virus/malware issue. I suggest posting this in the Windows area unless one of the scanners picked up spyware.

Hi Greyknight,
Thanks for your reply. Really? That is good news (I think). Since I last posted, the issue "seems" to only be with IE and not being able to access add/remove programs. Also downloaded Comodo BOClean Anti Malware - didn't come up with anything.

Trend Micro AntiVirus found Freeloader_Smitfraud yesterday. Comodo firewall has given warnings about applications trying to act as a server and IE being an invisible application.

DISCover Stream Hub is try to act as a server
Description: Suspicious Behaviour (DiscStreamHub.exe)
Application: C:\Program Files\DISC\DiscStreamHub.exe
Parent: C:\Program Files\DISC\DISCover.exe
Protocol: TCP In
Destination: 0.0.0.0::9485

DISCover Drop & Play System Executable is trying to act as a server
Application: DISCover.exe
Remote IP: 127.0.0.1 Port: 5842 - TCP

Generic Host Process for Win32 Services is trying to act as a server
Application: svchost.exe
Remote IP: 192.168.0.100 Port: dhcp (68) - UDP
Parent services.exe

iexplore.exe is an invisible application. Invisible application connecting to the Internet could be a sign of trojan/spyware/virus activity

Let's see if you can find something:

1. Download combofix at http://www.techsuppo...Bs/ComboFix.exe
2. Double-click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note:
Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Hi Grey,
My computer is having another "episode". It has been pop-up free since 11/28. When I booted up tonight it was like my computer was taken over/possessed. I started getting the psapi.dll is not a valid windows image pop-ups and various others that didn't happen last week:

-Windows IE: Cannot find 'http://slirsredirect.search.aol.com/slirs_http/sredir?sredir=692&query=' Make sure path or Internet address is correct
-Windows IE: Cannot find 'http://127.0.0.1:37848/popup/popup_behavior.htm' Make sure path or Internet address is correct
-WksSb.exe - bad image
-(null) is not a valid Win32 application
- Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error! Program: C:\Program Files\Comodo\Firewall\CPF.exe abnormal program termination

Trend Micro AntiVirus had continuous popups about blocking DISCover. I couldn't X out of them and Trend kept freezing. Parts of my screen started going blank, I was unable to open any programs or use the ones that were already open. I wasn't able to shut down/restart and eventually shut down with the power button.
While all of this was going on I couldn't assess the task manager either: "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc00012d).

Comodo Firewall keeps blocking an application that it says has to do with Trend.
"UfSeAgnt.exe may be using SfCtlCom.exe to conceal its behavior in an attempt to connect to the internet with SfFnUp.exe"
"UfSeAgnt.exe has tried to use parent application SfCtlCom.exe through OLE Automation. OLE Automation can be used to hijack other applications."

I don't believe this is a malware issue. Just wanted to confirm with that log there and it seems you are clear there.

Did you try uninstalling that DivX program? How about using a System Restore point to before you installed that program? If that still didn't resolve the issue, post in the Windows board for more support.

I tried to uninstall DivX but I'm not able to access add/remove programs to make sure it is gone. My CPU Usage is very high, 50 - 90% with just Firefox running.
When I opened the task manager, I saw Compaq Connections Agent running. I tried to "bring to front" to see what it was. Nothing happened. I ended the task.
I went into msconfig to remove it from the start tab. I got some error messages about not being an administrator, although I am logged in as the administrator (only 1 set up on this computer).

I am not familiar with using a System Restore point so I don't know how to do that.

I wanted to run another HijackThis log just to be sure this is not a malware issue. I got the following message: "For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the files as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot."

Here's my log - thanks again

Download Hoster at http://www.greyknigh.../spy/Hoster.exe and run it. Click on Restore Original Hosts button and press OK. If you used a custom HOSTS file, you will need to restore the file back. That will reset the hosts file entries for you back to the default.

Go to Start->Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore and choose a date before all these problems began.

If you still experience lags, go to Start->Run and type in msconfig and hit OK. Then go to the Startup tab and uncheck programs you don't need running at startup. Most startup programs are just wasting resources. The ones you need to be running all the time are like you firewall, antivirus or antispyware. Anything else usually can be disabled.
