Hi,
My mother gave me her old computer for school. However, it is full of viruses and malicious spyware. I've ran NOD32 from ESET and XoftSpySE. These programs have removed much of the problems.

I've also ran Hijackthis and included the log file below. Also, I included the list of uninstall programs as instructed.

Any and all information is appreciated.

Thanks
Tanya

Hello tanyatx and welcome to geekstogo :) my name is andrewuk and i will be helping you with your problems!

I am going over your log now, and I'll be back soon with instructions on how to proceed.

In the meantime, I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

1. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

2. It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.

3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.

4. If, during our fix, you believe your pc is running fine and decide to leave - please see point (1) or leave a note to that effect on the thread so that we can close the thread down as resolved.

5. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Hi tanyatx

i can see some more infections on your machine, and it will take us a few posts to clear them all.

in this post i want to update your java (it is out of date) and we will also tackle an infection. and to finish off with we will do an online scan.

====STEP1====
an out of date java does expose your machine to infection

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 Checked
      Downloaded Applets
      Downloaded Applications
      Other Files

  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

====STEP2====

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log in a reply to this thread.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button" when VundoFix appears upon rebooting.

====STEP3====

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases

  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer

  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:

  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
so, in your next reply could i see:
1. the vundofix log
2. the kaspersky scan log
3. a new hijackthis log

..........if all those logs may prove too much to reply in one post (i.e. there is too much information for one post to take), you may have to spread them out over 2 or more replies to ensure you can get all the logs here.

Hi tanyatx

before we get into the fixes, could you rename the HijackThis.exe file at this location C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe to user.exe - there are some infections that hide bad entries from Hijackthis.exe.

====STEP1====
there are some infections in the temp folders we need to clean

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

====STEP2====
there are some infections in the java cache we need to clean
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.

====STEP3====

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer. Save it to your desktop.

do not run this file yet

Please copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat. Please save it on your desktop.

sc stop "Network Monitor"
sc delete "Network Monitor"
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {D49E9D35-254C-4c6a-9D17-95018D228FF5} - (no file)
O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Network Monitor

Please note any other programs that you dont recognize in that list in your next response
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Program Files\Network Monitor
    C:\Documents and Settings\katheryn taylor\Desktop\backups\backup-20071201-104052-817.dll
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Update\dnse.exe
    C:\Program Files\MSN\mezeno22011.exe
    C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone\quda.dll
    C:\Program Files\MSN Gaming Zone\rteme.html
    C:\WINDOWS\b103.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\capcon\son22011.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\mljhfcc.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt

*If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately, you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine, choose Yes.
**If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\********_******.log
(where "********_******" is the "date_time")

Click "Exit" to close OTMoveIt.
