Hi,

popuper.exe and smitfraud or whatever it is has found its way onto my system. ;)

Initially I got the bogus spyware warning yellow triangle and offers to download remedial programs to fix it, but obviously closed them. I manually deleted all the icons that appeared in my Windows directory (casino stuff etc) and renamed popuper.exe and intmonp.exe while running in safe mode. I also had to delete a load of rubbish that appeared in my IE favourites.

So far I have run the following programs (all of which are up to date):

Microsoft Antispyware beta1 - possible browser hijack / modifier found: searchmaid - I clicked on remove.

Ad-Aware SE Personal - found a few things first time round (can't remember what) now finds nothing.

CWShredder214 - found nothing.

Spybot S&D (with fix installed) - finds nothing now (think it found a few minor things first time round [sorry I can't remember what they were!], but it fixed them).

E-Trust Pestpatrol - found com.com. & tribalfusion.com. Deleted both. Now finds nothing on repeated checks.

Norton Antivirus 2005 - no viruses found. :tazz:

Trend Micro - found Trojans WINSHOW.P & AGENT.JA Deleted both, but the latter is back. Now finds only TROJAN AGENT.JA on repeated checks.

My default browser page was switched to Searchmaid or something, and my desktop was the blue background that others have mentioned with the warning message.

I have now deleted popuper.exe and intmonp.exe while in safe mode. I have also deleted c:\wp.exe and c:\wp.bmp having ended the wp.exe process in task manager (running XP normally, not safe mode). Instead of the blue warning background I now have a black one. I still only have two tabs on my display settings and cannot change the background. I've run all the programmes mentioned above several times, in safe and normal mode, and have taken the remedial action suggested by each.

Not sure if it's relevant, but I ran windows update after being infected, and installed a few of the most recent updates. I installed Service Pack 2 ages ago though. I have also just installed (i.e. post infection) MSN Messenger 7.0, having read about security problems with 6.2. I have deleted 6.2 using Add/Remove Programs, but still get 2 Messenger windows on startup. Bit random!

Your help would be very much appreciated, as I'm at a bit of a loss at what to do! Most of the problems seem to be fixed, but I still can't change the background, and I'm concerned that my system is still compromised.

I've followed all the steps that are set out in your 'Before posting your Hijackthis Log' thread.

The Log file from Hijackthis is this:

I've got an ad-aware log from my last Ad-Aware check if you need it too. Nothing came up.

I realise that you're all extremely busy, but I would really appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance!

EDIT: Hi, I've run more checks, and it seems everything's gone. I just need help with editing my registry, as I don't want to make any mistakes. I'd also appreciate it if you could take a look at my HJT log to see if there's anything in there that shouldn't be. I really need my pc for work, so help soon would be much appreciated, and I'm nervous about using the internet in case there's still something harmful on my pc!

Thanks again.

Hi smiddyo,

Welcome to Geeks 2 Go. Sorry about the delay in getting to your post, we have been very busy.

Do you still require help or are your problems resolved.

Please let me know and if you still require assistance, please post a fresh HJT log.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me.

I would still like help: I haven't yet got my display properties tabs back, and spoolsv.exe is running (I think I read somewhere that's not good) and I haven't done anything with the Registry. I don't get any more pop-ups or the smitfraud warning message though.

Here's my latest HJT log:

Also, I have recently installed MSN Messenger 7.0, but now when I boot up, I get two messenger windows - MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger? How do I get rid of Windows Messenger (I don't remember installing that!) as it doesn't appear in the add/remove programs list?

Thanks

Hi smiddyo,

Let's get you up and running

please print off a copy of these instructions so you have them when you require to reboot.

*Download and install Registrar Lite version 2.00
*Double click the purple Registrar Lite icon on your desktop.
*Copy the line below and paste it into the "Address" field (located at the top) of the program:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

*Click the "Go" button.
*It will take you into the "Policies" folder.
*Locate the "System" folder (in the right panel)
*If found, right-click on the System folder and go to Delete
*Be very careful that you only delete the System folder that is inside the Policies folder.

Reboot your computer again.

Now right click on desktop and see if you can reset your desktop background

Carry out a free virus scan from the following link. Register your name, for company put anything you want to type, and add your email address. Allow it to fix anything it might find.

Kaspersky

Press Ctrl/Alt/Delete and if any instances of msmsgs.exe are running press on end task.

Rescan with HJT and check the following

O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe
O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {838C7869-02FF-4A69-8D65-D8C499A2FD1F} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {838C7869-02FF-4A69-8D65-D8C499A2FD1F} - (no file) (HKCU)

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click on FIX CHECKED.

Download the following program, but do not run it yet.

Cleanup

Reboot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key whilst your PC boots up.

Set system to show hidden files (click link below if you do not know how)

Show hidden files

Using Windows explorer locate and delete the following files if found:

C:\Program Files\Messenger

Reverse the show hidden files proceedure

Now run Cleanup to get rid of temp files, junk etc.

Reboot normally.

Download the following free 14 day trial of Ewido from the link below

Ewido

Install it and then double click on the new icon for the program. You can't miss it, it's a big yellow E. It will ask you to upgrade the database. Follow the instructions.
Once it is ready click on the Scanner button, Select C drive if you have more than one and then start.

grab a cup of coffee, sandwiches, book and sleeping bag as this will take some time. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Carry out another HJT scan and post the log back here, so we can sort out any remnants, and let me know if desktop has been restored
