popuper.exe and smitfraud or whatever it is has found its way onto my system.
Initially I got the bogus spyware warning yellow triangle and offers to download remedial programs to fix it, but obviously closed them. I manually deleted all the icons that appeared in my Windows directory (casino stuff etc) and renamed popuper.exe and intmonp.exe while running in safe mode. I also had to delete a load of rubbish that appeared in my IE favourites.
So far I have run the following programs (all of which are up to date):
Microsoft Antispyware beta1 - possible browser hijack / modifier found: searchmaid - I clicked on remove.
Ad-Aware SE Personal - found a few things first time round (can't remember what) now finds nothing.
CWShredder214 - found nothing.
Spybot S&D (with fix installed) - finds nothing now (think it found a few minor things first time round [sorry I can't remember what they were!], but it fixed them).
E-Trust Pestpatrol - found com.com. & tribalfusion.com. Deleted both. Now finds nothing on repeated checks.
Norton Antivirus 2005 - no viruses found.
Trend Micro - found Trojans WINSHOW.P & AGENT.JA Deleted both, but the latter is back. Now finds only TROJAN AGENT.JA on repeated checks.
My default browser page was switched to Searchmaid or something, and my desktop was the blue background that others have mentioned with the warning message.
I have now deleted popuper.exe and intmonp.exe while in safe mode. I have also deleted c:\wp.exe and c:\wp.bmp having ended the wp.exe process in task manager (running XP normally, not safe mode). Instead of the blue warning background I now have a black one. I still only have two tabs on my display settings and cannot change the background. I've run all the programmes mentioned above several times, in safe and normal mode, and have taken the remedial action suggested by each.
Not sure if it's relevant, but I ran windows update after being infected, and installed a few of the most recent updates. I installed Service Pack 2 ages ago though. I have also just installed (i.e. post infection) MSN Messenger 7.0, having read about security problems with 6.2. I have deleted 6.2 using Add/Remove Programs, but still get 2 Messenger windows on startup. Bit random!
Your help would be very much appreciated, as I'm at a bit of a loss at what to do! Most of the problems seem to be fixed, but I still can't change the background, and I'm concerned that my system is still compromised.
I've followed all the steps that are set out in your 'Before posting your Hijackthis Log' thread.

I've got an ad-aware log from my last Ad-Aware check if you need it too. Nothing came up.
I realise that you're all extremely busy, but I would really appreciate your help. Many thanks in advance!
EDIT: Hi, I've run more checks, and it seems everything's gone. I just need help with editing my registry, as I don't want to make any mistakes. I'd also appreciate it if you could take a look at my HJT log to see if there's anything in there that shouldn't be. I really need my pc for work, so help soon would be much appreciated, and I'm nervous about using the internet in case there's still something harmful on my pc!
Thanks again.
