I am lookinig for a legally free software firewall that I can install on Vista that works well and doesnt slow down the computer. On xp machines I use zone alarm, but from what I can tell the Vista compatible version is still in beta.

Any help or suggestions would be great, Thanks!!!!

You could use the built-in firewall in Vista.

I could but I would rather not. I trust a 3rd party app first.

Thanks

A long time ago, I used Comodo Firewall. It's free as long as your register.

This ZoneAlarm only works with Vista. Does not list it as being in Beta.

This is ZoneAlarm's Beta Center. Check this one ( ZoneAlarm 7.1.218.000 (Vista) ) against the other to confirm.

Somebody's already posted, but I only recommend Comodo Firewall (firewall.comodo.com). It's the best firewall behind Outpost, and it's legally free. Comodo offers free updates for life. I recommend the firewall, but all their other free products are a little immature for mainstream use.

Most people I've recommended Comodo to are surprised with it. I use version 2.4 because I had issues with v3. You can't go past Comodo. Various independent tests have reported it's one of the best 3 firewalls and one of few that passes leak tests which is important these days because of spyware and greyware. Comodo can control all of that so information you enter doesn't leak into the net.

For those who want to know:

Leak Test Done Here

Compare ZoneAlarm Firewall keeping your PC completely stealthed against Comodo Firewall here: Shields Up!

Enjoy and be sure to run some of the other tests. :)

I have been a shields up visitor for a long time now.

But just to close off my topic, I downloaded the Comodo firewall, they have 2 versions, 32 bit and 64 bit both for xp and vista.

I love the Paranoid mode setting it has, I am now using Comodo as my standard.

Thanks for the great info.
