Hi,
When I go to search for files and folders on my sons computer it opens and then nothing. No dog no search assistant nothing, His windows media says internal application error, and when I go to windows update it brings me to microsoft updates and at the bottom of the page it says done.

did it give an error number or information about it?

If not, search for WINDOWSUPDATE.log, should be in c:\windows

Open it in notepad and go to thebottom, where the FAILURE is reported. what does it say

See if this helps::

Click Start.
Choose Run.
In the Run box, type

regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll

Click OK.

then start > run
regedit.exe

navigate to the key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv

If you find a DeleteFlag value there on the right side, right click it and choose delete

Reboot, try windows update again

there is no deleteflag value...so you don't have to do anything.

Did you visit WindowsUpdate?
