Your son in law's PC is probably up to date with all the fixes from Microsoft, including SP2 (Service Pack 2). If your XP is not up to date or lacks SP2 (this was a major update for XP containing dozens of fixes) that might explain why your XP is not behaving the same as your son in law's.
Please check if you have SP2 installed. Start->Control Panel (classic view)->System.
Under the default 'General' tab it will say 'Service Pack 2'. If it doesn't, you need to install it. It's a large update so unless you have a very fast broadband link, downloading it from Microsoft Update is not an option. But UK users can order it on a free CD, which is what I did from here:

The UK was awash with them 3 or 4 years ago, so the chances of someone you know having one of these is very probable -- and it's perfectly legal for you to use it since it's only an update, not the full Windows XP.
If SP2 is already installed, there have been several smaller updates and fixes since that was released so you should visit 'Microsoft Update' using Internet Explorer if you don't have Automatic Updates turned on. The website will check your PC for relevant updates that are missing and offer to download and install them (which is done automatically):
