When ever my roommate tries to open her external drive after a couple of seconds the "windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close" box pops up.

The details window shows:
AppName: explorer.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.3156
ModName: mpegsplitter.ax
ModVer: 1.0.0.4
OffSet: 0002455b

If your quick you can even open a file and see whats inside, but there is only 4 or 5 seconds.

She has an HP Pavilion a736n
XP Home sp2
Seagate 160gb external drive w/usb connector, has own power supply

This problem just started about six days ago. We upgraded our internet, phone, cable tv (good riddance time warner) about two weeks ago to att fiber optics, and everything was great, no problems.
Any advise is greatly appreciated...ed

It's referring to 'mpeg splitter' being the problem. You should uninstall it.
