I've searched, but can't find a solution. :)

I'm running Win 2000. My laptop won't shutdown "normally" -- the End Program - wowexec message appears. To shutdown the computer, I have to pull the plug. Yesterday, I could not install some applications from my CD and I could not open some already installed applications which came with the computer from the Start or the shortcut on the desktop.

I've had problems with internet explorer for the past few weeks, but this seems unrelated.

:) Any solutions? :) :)

Hello lela,

I'd like to make sure that your system is free of malware before we attempt a resolution here. I suggest you go to the Malware Forum and run all the steps located in the START HERE. These self-help tools will help you clean up 70% of problems on your own. If you are still having problems after doing the steps, then please post a HiJackThis Log in THAT forum. If you are unable to run and/or post a HJT log, then post that in your initial post in the topic you create in that forum.

If you are still having problems after being given a clean bill of health from the malware expert, then please return to THIS thread and we will pursue other options to help you solve your current problem(s).

Regards,

Ax

after getting cleared by the malware forum...
wowexec is...
Windows16-bit On WindowsNT emulator - launched in conjunction with NTVDM.exe (NTVirtualDosMachine) in order to enable NT-based Windows operating systems to run MSDOS programs - mostly old games. It's a part of the operating system and without it you can't run older games. Only drawback seems to be that it stays resident in memory even after you exit from the game and sometimes will not allow another old game to launch until you manually shut it down from inside Windows Task Manager.
might try using the task manager to shut it down before you try to shut off your computer
no joy...
then you may want to try this in the registry...BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST..
the reg hack is here...
