Strange Google Problem

Hi,

something strange has been happening when I go on to google lately. I'm using ie 6.

I'll attempt to explain as best as I can. Basically when I go onto google and enter a search term, 'sponsored links' now comes up on the left hand side of the page on it's own section, squashing the rest of the page with the normal search results on.

This is not all however, as this causes the 'favourites' drop-down to blank out completely if you select it, and a few times I've had the message that ie needs to close while on this page.

Has anyone any idea what this could be? Other websites seem to be working okay so I'm not sure what it is. Spyware? Ad-Aware isn't finding anything.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT: Just to add, I've looked in my add/remove program list in control panel and there is something called 'search assistant adssite' on there that looks suspect. Could that be the culprit? Should I just remove it?

From some of the searches I made on "search assistant adssite", it seems to be hard to uninstall by some people and is considered malware. Just to be safe, please let our Malware Experts take a look at the HJT file. Please go to the Malware section of this forum and follow the instructions at the top. Especially the Click Here link. That will give you several steps that will help you clean up most of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the cleanup process you are still having difficulty, and you may not be, then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

Please be patient as the "Malware Forum" is a very busy place and a two or three day wait is not unusual.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the Malware Section, please return to this thread. Please do not post a HiJackThis log in this thread unless asked to do so and then only as an attachment. To attach log, when requested, either change the .log extension to .txt, or put the log into a compressed (zipped) folder.

Please post back if your problem has been solved.
