1) GoogleUpdater.exe, What is it? What does it do for me? Is OK to get rid of if its worthless to me?

2) GoogleUpdaterService.exe, Same question as above.

3) svchost.exe has 13 processes....

4) AppleMobileDeviceServices.exe, I have no idea what this is... all I have is an iPod and iTunes is installed.

Hello roni2743 and welcome to Geeks To Go!

1) This is a component of Google Updater. Google Updater is a program that downloads and installs all the software in the Google Pack. You can use Google Updater to monitor the status of your installation, run software that has been installed, or uninstall software. The program is not essential and can be disabled.

May I ask what problems, if any, you are having and where you are seeing GoogleUpdater.exe? Sometimes malicious programs disguise themselves as legitimate ones.

OK, you weren't done asking yet, haha.

2) The Google Updater Service is a Windows service that updates Google software that users have chosen to install. It ensures users have the most current software available. It is being distributed to ensure users' Google Toolbar search bars are Vista compatible.

3) Do you mean there are 13 individual svchost.exe processes running right now or is svchost.exe running 13 processes?

4) AppleMobilDeviceService.exe: Apple Mobile Device Service. Service installed with Apple's iTunes 7.3 onward. It enables iTunes to interact with the Apple iPhone and the Apple TV.

Down to end-user requirements.

If you do not have an iPhone or an Apple TV, then you do not need this service to be running in the background at every Windows boot-up : disable it by setting its Startup Mode to Disabled on the Services tab.

Otherwise, if you do have an iPhone, or an Apple TV that you will want to interface with iTunes, then leave this service enabled.

Note that all of the above information (except 3) was found by searching Google for the file name.

Regards,

Ax

Thanks for the fast reply!

1) I have no problem with GoogleUpdater.exe except what's the point of having it if I don't need it. The only thing I use from google is the search bar in my web browsers. What is Google Pack (I don't think i want it haha)?

2) My toolbar works just fine. Can I get rid of this now? Can I update manually if required? I hate clutter.

3) I think svchost.exe is running 13 processes, which I heard is normal (although I'm not sure I understood your question). Some are marked as SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE. Together they use about 100MB. Also it is always accessing the internet. Does it really need to be transferring data 24/7? What does it send?

4) Only thing I have is an iPod so I'll get rid of that. I definitely won't be needing it.

Here are my responses:
  • Sounds fine to me! See #2.
  • Go to Start | Run, type msconfig, and press Enter. In the System Configuration Utility window that appears, click the Startup tab. Clear the checkbox for the entry, click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer and you should get a message telling you that msconfig has been customized. Just check the option to not show the message again and click OK.
  • Make sure none of the entries are scvhost.exe, as that would be a problem. Let's take a look at these svchost.exe processes in more detail: (works with XP Pro only) Go to Start | Run, type the following command, and press Enter:
    cmd /k tasklist /svc /fi "IMAGENAME eq svchost.exe" > %temp%\svc.txt && notepad %temp%\svc.txt && del %temp%\svc.txt && exit
A notepad window will appear showing the services svchost.exe is running. Copy all of the text and paste it in this thread. Then highlight what you pasted and click the Posted Image button so we can read it easily
  • See #2

Sorry about that, the command should run in Vista as well, but you may need to set the command prompt to run with administrative privileges. There is a pinned topic on how to do this I believe.

I'm not THAT bad with computers

I would never think it! I just know that getting the command prompt in Vista to run with admin privileges isn't very obvious. I had trouble the first time I tried running a command from the command prompt in Vista, I'd tell any user in this same manner I told you. :)

As for your services, these are the ones running when you ran the command:
Application Experience
Application Information
Application Management
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
Windows Audio
Base Filtering Engine
Background Intelligent Transfer
Computer Browser
Bluetooth Support Service
Certificate Propagation
Cryptographic Services
Client Side Caching
DCOM Server Process Launcher
DHCP Client
DNS Client
Diagnostic Policy Service
Extensible Authentication Protocol
ReadyBoost
Windows Event Log
COM+ Event System
Function Discovery Resource Publication
Group Policy Client
IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
IP Helper
KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator
LAN Manager Server
Workstation
Lan Manager Hosts
Multimedia Class Scheduler
Microsoft OneCare Live
Network Connections
Network List Service
Network Location Awareness
Network Store Interface Service
Program Compatibility Assistant Service
Plug and Play
IPsec Policy Agent
User Profile Service
Remote Access Connection Manager
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Smart Card
Task Scheduler
Secondary Logon
System Event Notification Service
Shell Hardware Detection
SSDP Discovery
Still Image Service
Superfetch
Tablet PC Input Service
Telephony
Terminal Services
Themes
Distributed Link Tracking Client
UPnP Device Host

Windows Time
Diagnostic System Host
WebClient
Windows Error Reporting Service
Windows Defender
WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service
Windows Management Instrumentation
WLAN AutoConfig
Portable Device Enumerator Service

Windows Update
Windows Driver Foundation

They are all valid Windows services. If you so desire, you can follow configurations outlined by Black Viper in the following web page:
