I am on Vista, and this is what it says whenever I try to play anything:

I was having the exact same problem with my Gateway laptop running Vista Home Premium. The fix was pretty easy - give it a try:

Go to Control Panel -> Sound

A message will pop up to tell you that "enhancements" aren't working, and it will ask if you want to disable them. Click "Yes" and then "Apply" or "OK." Bingo: everything started working again.
