I was called in to try and fix my girlfriend's computer which it turns out has the trojan Virtu-Gen in a .dll file in the system32 directory. Sophos Anti-Virus couldn't clean it. Neither could VundoFix. I've tried searching for other removal methods and have come up empty. I came across this forumand decided to give it a whirl. Here is the hijackthis log:

Dear destinybond, :)

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

We are currently studying your log. :)
*************************************

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

You can re-enable TeaTimer once your system is clean.
*********************************

Try re-running the VundoFix program again after you have disabled Spybot's Teatimer on your computer.

Restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log and post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Rambro,

Thanks for your reply to this. I followed your direction and disabled TeaTimer. I restarted and ran VundoFix again. Again, it caught the infected file (C:\windows\system32\ddcyxxx.dll), and again, it couldn't remove it. It gave me the following error (which it has done before, I just made a point to write it down this time):

"Error: 75 Path/File access error"

After that message, it said it couldn't delete it and would try again on restart. I restarted and the same happened.

Also, as Windows starts loading programs, I get this error message in a window titled RUNDLL:

"Error loading c:\windows\system32\ntyxenmy.dll. The specified module could not be found."

I don't know if that file is vital to anything, but it pops up every time Windows starts. I ran hijackthis. Here is the log:

I noticed the infected file (ddcyxxx.dll) listed there and checked out the "more info" on it. It suggested using Killbot to try and delete it on reboot. I tried that and got the following error message:

Dear destinybond, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Dear distinybond, while we are analyzing your computer try to refrain from installing any new software. :)
**************************

The following questions relates to the infected computer. Give your responses in detail, if you can.

Dear distinybond, is the computer in question a desktop or a laptop computer?

Who is your Internet Service Provider for the computer in question?

How are you connecting to the Internet with this computer, for example (through a dial up, dsl or cable modem)?

Are you using a broadband connection?

*********************************

Make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html
****************************************

Please do a search (i.e using the Windows XP's Search Feature) on your computer for this file: hnyigsai.exe. If you find this file please give me the "directory path/location" of this file.

If you did not find the above file (i.e. hnyigsai.exe) , tell me that I did not find this particular file.

(Note: From the HijackThis log, the file in question is located in the following directory, "C:\WINDOWS\system32\", I just want to see if the file is actually missing.)

See the following link as a reference: http://www.cyberwalk.../find-file.html.
*************************************

Look in your "add/remove" programs application located in the "control panel" for a program called "OuterInfo" (it is adware), please try to uninstall this program.

Download ComboFix from one of the locations below, and save it to your Desktop.

Link 2
Link 3

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Rambro,

Thanks for your response. The file you asked me to search for was indeed missing. I was not able to find it. I also was able to remove OuterInfo.

Currently, my issue is resolved and you may close this thread. At the suggestion of a co-worker, I used BartPE and was successfully able to delete the infected file. Everything appears to be clean, and I'm running a few more scans just to be sure nothing was left behind. The registry appears ok, and the system seems to be running without a hitch. I appreciate your time in helping me work through this issue.

Dear destinybond, :)

I will leave this thread open for a few more days, just in case of problems.

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein -> Here (Note: disregard the stuff on Adaware 2007, that program has problems.).

Good call on leaving the thread open. The trojan is back... or more likely, the root never left. Once I get the computer (either tomorrow or Sunday), I'll run HJT and post a log. I added most of the suggestions in the how to protect yourself page on this site, so I did install a few things since the last log. Just wanted to post an update to keep the thread open.

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you fix these items:

If you choose to remove QuickTime, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

If you choose to remove Viewpoint Manager, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Delete the following file/files marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkjk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddcyxxx.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebca.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sumttur.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklm.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntyxenmy.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hnyigsai.exe

Delete the following folder/folders marked in blue (if they exist):

C:\Program Files\Outerinfo

Optional folder/folders marked in blue to be deleted (if they exist):

If you uninstalled QuickTime you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\QuickTime

If you uninstalled Viewpoint Manager you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Ok, I'm officially baffled by this thing. The system is now showing no signs of infection. Enough changed since the last HJT log that I posted (mostly the removal of the previous infected file and the addition of someof the suggested safeguards mentioned on this site. I just ran HJT to provide a more accurate log of how things are now. I'm open to any suggestions for change or removal, but the system seems fine... for now... I'm sure I will get a phone call tomorrow saying that the trojan is popping up again. Here is the log:

Dear destinybond, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Dear distinybond, while we are analyzing your computer try to refrain from installing any new software. :)
**************************

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

You can re-enable TeaTimer once your system is clean.
*********************************

The following is important. I would like you to disable the "real time" protection of your "Spywareguard" software. After your computer is clean of spyware, you can re-enable the real time protection for this software. Here is how it can be done:

SpywareGuard
  • Right click the running icon of SpywareGuard in the system tray to open the program.
  • Click on the "Options" button on the left hand side of the program. This will display a "SpywareGuard Options" dialog box.
  • Click on the "General" link, under "General Protection Options", uncheck the "Enable Real Time Scanning" checkbox and press the "Save Settings" button.
  • Then go to Menu, File, and choose Exit.
  • An "Exit SpywareGuard?" dialog box will pop up. Click on the "Yes" button.
************************

The following questions relates to the infected computer. Give your responses in detail, if you can.

Dear distinybond, is the computer in question a desktop or a laptop computer?

Who is your Internet Service Provider for the computer in question?

How are you connecting to the Internet with this computer, for example (through a dial up, dsl or cable modem)?

Are you using a broadband connection?

*********************************

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O16 - DPF: {549F957E-2F89-11D6-8CFE-00C04F52B225} (CMV5 Class) - http://coolsavings.c...oad/cscmv5X.cab

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.
*****************

Dear destinybond, in post #8 of this thread I asked you about two applications that were optional uninstalls:

Viewpoint Manager
QuickTime

Do you want to keep these programs or uninstall these programs? Follow my instruction in post #8 of this thread, if you want to get rid of these programs.

****************************

Dear destinybond, in post #4 of this thread I asked you to run the ComboFix application and post its log. Please run this application and post its log.
**************************

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log, along with the log from the ComboFix application.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Rambro,

I went through your suggested steps. First, the questions you asked...

The computer in question is a laptop.

The ISP is Comcast, and it is connected via a cable modem, and is a broadband connection.

There still seems to be no visible signs of the trojan. It was gone last Wednesday, came back on Thursday, and hasn't shown up since. Windows is encountering errors once in a while (blue screen, have to shut down type errors). Also, sometimes the computer just shuts itself off. I did remove Quicktime and Viewpoint as suggested. Here are the logs you asked for:

Dear destinybond, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please download SilentRunners from here: http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.zip. Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, it will create a logfile on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile in a reply to this post.

Dear destinybond, :)

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

I would like you to generate a "Startup List" log using the HijackThis application. Here is how you can do this:

Restart your computer.

  • Open Hijackthis, In the lower right corner click the "Config..." (Configuration) button.
  • Once in the "Configuration" panel, click "Misc Tools" button.
  • Next to the "Generate StartupList log" button, place a check in the checkboxes "List also minor sections" (full) and "List empty sections (complete).
  • Then click the "Generate StartupList log" button.
  • Click "Yes" to the box that pops-up.
  • Then copy and paste the notepad text that appears in the generated "startuplist.txt" file in a reply to this post.

Restart your computer, and then please post a new HijackThis log, along with the "Startup List" log using the HijackThis application.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

The Startup List makes it too long to post. I will attach the file.

There is no noticeable difference in the system. Still no sign of infection. No crashes either, but I haven't tried running any other programs.
