(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.

Dear destinybond, I would like you to edit your "registry settings", but before you do that, I want you to make a back up copy of your "registry" in case something goes wrong. Here is how this is done:

Back up your current registry

1) Click on the Start button.

2) From the menu that appears, choose Run.

3) In the window that appears, there is a text area labeled Open. In that area, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks").

4) Click the OK button (or hit the Enter or Return key on your keyboard).

5) The Registry Editor window should open.

6) If My Computer is not highlighted, click on it once so that it is highlighted.

7) On the menu bar, click on Registry and then click on Export Registry File.

8) The Export Registry File window will appear. In the Save In drop-down box at the top, choose Desktop.

9) In the File Name box at the bottom, type "backup" (without the quotation marks), then click the Save button.

10) A backup copy of the entire registry will now be saved to your desktop in case something goes wrong.

Notes:

* To restore the registry from the backup file you made, follow the same steps as above, but in step 2 choose Import Registry File instead of Export Registry File. Or, alternatively, you could double-click on the backup file on the desktop and answer Yes when it asks if you want to import the information into the registry.
* Once you've made changes to the registry and you are sure that you no longer need the backup file you made, simply delete it from the desktop.

Edit your registry

Please run Notepad and paste the following text into a new file:

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\ddcyxxx]

Save the file to the desktop as fix.reg and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files".

Please go to the desktop and double-click on fix.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcyxxx - ddcyxxx.dll (file missing)

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log along with a new Slient Runners log.

Accept the License Agreement by clicking on its associated "radio/option" button.

Scroll to the box that says: Windows Platform - Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 3

Click on the link that says: Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language and proceed with the download and installation. (Note: It should also say: jre-6u3-windows-i586-p.exe - 13.93 MB)

Dear destinybond, the following lines are optional fixes to stop unnecessary programs from running on startup, which may increase computer system performance. I highly recommend you to fix these items:

igfxtray.exe - Part of Intels Common User Interface for chipsets with integrated graphics controllers - which allows user to change different driver properties through Windows User Interface. Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

AOLSoftware.exe - Quoted from AOL Beta Team, "Manages a component essential to the operation of most current AOL software, client or not. You should be able to remove it from Startup (it'll just load when Explorer is launched, which will extend load time a bit), but do leave it on your system". Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

realsched.exe - The Real Player automatic update utility. It has no real functional purpose. I would certainly stop this from running on startup. To disable "tkbell.exe" in the new version (1) Start RealOne Player (2) Tools -> Preferences (3) Automatic services in the Categories pane (4) Uncheck all options and then OK. msmsgs.exe - Windows Messenger utility. If you don\'t use Windows Messenger, this can be annoying. Available via Start -> Programs. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows XP

* Click "Start".
* Open "My Computer".
* Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
* Select the "View" Tab.
* Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
* Make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is unchecked
* Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
* Click "Yes" to confirm.
* Click "OK".

This post is a tough post I had to compose and its mostly my concerns/suggests about the programs on your add/remove programs list. The programs on the add/remove list, that is, the ones that I could find information on are legitimate programs. Therefore the uninstalls you make will be "optional uninstalls", meaning you don't have to uninstall these applications.

Dell, has "pre-loaded" the dell laptop of your girlfriends computer with a great deal of software that she will probably not use. You could probably uninstall these programs through Start -> programs -> app you want to uninstall -> the app's uninstaller, or through your Add/Remove programs in your control panel.

The ISP is Comcast, and it is connected via a cable modem, and is a broadband connection.

Since you are using a broadband connection, their is some software on your pc relating to AOL, Earthlink and NetZero that you might consider uninstalling, namely:

The other stuff stayed, for now, until I can sit down with her and see if there's anything she wants to get rid of. Also, so you are aware, I had to put QuickTime back on the computer so she could use her iTunes.

Please go HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan

• Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
• A new window will open...click the Check Now button
• Enter your Country
• Enter your State/Province
• Enter your e-mail address and click send
• Select either Home User or Company
• Click the big Scan Now button
• If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
• It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
• When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
• When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Restart your computer and then please post a new HijackThis log, along with the log from the Panda Online scan.

Dear destinybond, please empty out your Recycle Bin.

You need to disable your system restore, because if you go back in time with "System Restore", it's possible that you will be infected again. Here is how to do that:

(Note: By disabling "System Restore", all existing restore points will be deleted. However, if these existing restore points contain spyware, then you should follow the rest of these instructions).

To turn off Windows XP System Restore

1. Click the Start button.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. On the System Restore tab, check Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives.
4. Click Apply.
5. A dialog message box should pop up asking you, Do you want to turn off System Restore? Click Yes to do this.
6. Click OK.
7. Restart Windows.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore

Follow the steps in the previous section, but in step 3, uncheck Turn off System Restore or Turn off System Restore on all drives. Then click OK.
