Guess the reason, no one answered your post is that they can't see anything wrong with the log. You have several file missing entries which could be removed but other than that everything appears normal. (All of the file missing entries were probably removed by mistake tho some may just be hard for your HijackThis to see when it runs under your current login.)

Right click on the clock at the bottom right and select Task Manager then Processes then click twice on the CPU at the top of the column. That will sort the processes by CPU percent. The top entry after it settles down should be System Idle with 95% or more. Is it? If not what are the top 3 users?

When you say slow are you talking about surfing the internet or just in general?

You can try mwav.exe. This is a 10 meg download so needs a fast link. It will also take hours to run but if there is something on your PC I think it would see it.

javaw.exe is the Sun Java Virtual Machine so it could indicate that you have some java program running. If you select it (in Task Manager) and then End Process do things quiet down?

Another program that causes constant harddrive grinding is the indexing. You can turn it off and see if that helps: Star then rightclick on My computer and select Manage then Services and Applications then Services. In the right window scroll down until you find:

Indexing Service.

Double click on it and press Stop. IF that helps you can change the Startup type to: Manual or Disable.

Another cause of slowness in XP is that it will sometimes set the IDE interface to PIO

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

1.
Open Device Manager. (Device Manager is an option when you rightclick on My Computer and select Manage)

2.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.

3.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.

4.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:

• Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.

• Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.

Indexing was already turned off
also, transfer mode was set to DMA if Available... I toggled them as directed, yet no change.

Note, this is a fairly recent issue on my computer. I did have quite a few viruses (virii?), and ran many different types of scans to help clean them off. But the slowness still remains.

Any other ideas??? I am at a loss! Tell me more about the mwav.exe

It's a very good program but very slow. Really does takes hours to finish. Just download it (Save and then Open is best) and it will unpack and install itself. Accept the defaults and then tell it to run or scan or whatever it uses. Don't have it up now but it should be obvious.
