Hi,
I hope this is in the right forum. sorry - I'm a noob at this stuff I hope this makes sense.

I managed to get a computer from my work which was used as a CAD computer, it's an HP workstation xw6000 and I already have an OK desktop for home. But my home desktop needs a few things: RAM upgrade, videocard upgrade and more HD space. What I was planning on doing is taking the bits I need from the work desktop and putting them into my computer - except the HD. This is the first step, I would like to use that HD to make an external HD. So here are my questions:

1 - Do I pull out what I need first, then format then make the external? or just format the drive after the external is made
2 - Is there a way to check that the HD is ok? I don't want it crashing out after a week.
3 - Do I need to take the "external" case of the HD off then insert into the external case?

I've found quite a bit of info on making the external HDs but nothing about taking one from an old computer.

I haven't decided on a case yet.

Thanks so much

1 - Do I pull out what I need first, then format then make the external? or just format the drive after the external is made

you can do either....you could format the drive while it's in the machine that it's in now....or you can wait till it's in the enclosure and format it once you hook it up to your new computer

2 - Is there a way to check that the HD is ok? I don't want it crashing out after a week.

you can run chkdsk on it (again either while it's in it's current machine or once it's in the enclosure)...and if you can find out what make the drive is (i.e. western digital or seagate or whatever) you can check their website for a diagnostic utility (all drive manufacturers have such utilities)

3 - Do I need to take the "external" case of the HD off then insert into the external case?

absolutely not...opening a hard drive anywhere but in a "clean room" can cause extreme damage to the drive...you just take the drive out of the computer and put it into the external enclosure per the manufacturer's instructions
