Hmm... I'm just a bit confused - why don't the number of members at the bottom of the main forum match up with the member numbers under your profile?

There are like 228k registered members but I know at one person who is member 231668?

*Fredil Yupigo is confused for Christmas... odd gift :)

it's possible (just wasting time typing things...surely admin will have the right answer) that someone who get's banned get's removed from the member count? or the rare occurance that an account get's deleted? it would be silly to go back through the list of nmbers to find a free one...so the next member just get's the next number

When a member is deleted, their member number isn't reused (how wasteful :)), so in most IPB forums there is a member with a higher member number than the member counter.

You're both right. Whenever a new member account, or post is created, a new row is created in the database. These are simply numbered consecutively. However, if the member account is deleted (spammer, dup account, by request, etc), they are not counted in the total.
