I see that a lot of other people are facing the same problems as me - the annoying little red circle icon with the white cross that causes pop ups and various icons to be displayed on the desktop. I have attempted to follow the advice on other threads, and have managed to get my desktop wallpaper thanks to that (thankyou!) but unfortuntely I cant seem to get rid of the source. So heres my hijackthis log:

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update and reboot.

We'll need you to download the latest version of HiJack This. Click Here to download the latest version (1.99.1). Please save it in a permanent folder (such as C:\HJT). This is to ensure that backups are saved and accessible in the event you should need it.

Post a new HiJackThis log.

That icon is actually due to Hotoffers. Let's get rid of it first, then we'll take another look at your log:

*Click Here to download Killbox by Option^Explicit.
*Extract the program to your desktop and double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file path listed below:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\param32.dll

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the YES button.

Then run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log.

Make sure you are disconnected from the Internet and that all programs and windows are closed. Place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

O9 - Extra button: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {7C1CD1C8-6269-453F-90B6-B19812E9988D} - (no file) (HKCU)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Microsoft AntiSpyware helper - {7C1CD1C8-6269-453F-90B6-B19812E9988D} - (no file) (HKCU)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.r...RdxIE601_de.cab
O16 - DPF: {E7544C6C-CFD6-43EA-B4E9-360CEE20BDF7} (MainControl Class) - http://skaner.mks.co...kanerOnline.cab

O23 - Service: Trace network connections (ACCRA) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\mocih.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Provides three management service (FreeBSD) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\System32\dev32.exe (file missing)

Close HiJackThis.

*Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
*In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*In the field labeled Full Path of File to Delete enter the file paths listed below ONE AT A TIME (EXACTLY as it appears, please double check to make sure! I would just copy each file path and paste it in the field):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\mocih.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dev32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hz.sys

Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one. When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button. Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above. After that LAST file path has been entered press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.

Post a new HiJackThis log.
