First of all a word of thanks for the excellent help! I have written so many times, I fear I'd be repeating myself if I kept saying thank you, but occasionally I feel I just have to! A great service!

My PC is only 6 months old and running a bit slow. I think it is running slow only when on the net, Im not actually sure. But even back and fwd pages take too long to come up. So here goes;

I have Ad-Aware and Spybot, but am afraid to delete what adaware suggests!
Is it absolutely safe to do so?

Also I downloaded Spykiller, and its list seemed to be more alarming!
Some of the spyware files found included files from Creative Labs. Will deleting these harm the soundcard files?
Anyway, you have to subscribe to this to use the clean/remove facility so I'll leave it for the moment.

So I ran Spybot and heres what I got:

SpyKiller is a dangerous spyware remover program. It can actually damage your computer. We strongly recommend you uninstall it through the control panel. Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware are the two most reliable spyware remover programs around. It is perfectly OK to remove what these two programs list. After you remove what Spybot and Ad-aware list and restart, please let us see a new HJT log to see what they missed. <_<

Hi!

I have now deleted what Ad-aware and Spybot found and have noticed some improvement in performance, and a lot less activity noise from the HD.

Loading MSN Home page was 60-70secs now 45secs

Clicking on a news link was 10-25 secs now 8 secs

page refresh was 30 secs apx now 22 secs apx

So maybe not mind-boggling improvements but at least going in the right direction!
I will now d/l Hijack This and send report!

Many thanks

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log. <_<

As a matter of interest were the ones I removed harmful? I noticed there were some files related to Works Calendar and MS Office.

There is no major increase in speed. One or two things took a few seconds longer to load, and one was faster. For example this page takes 40 secs to load:

www.iol.ie

Maybe this is usual. A friend also suggested doing this:

start-run-msconfig

click elective startup

click startup tab

REMOVE RUBBISH !

But what is rubbish? Under startup tab there are about 14 listings. Strangely enough this is one of them:

C:/ProgramFiles/Spykiller/spykiller.exe/startup

This is the program you asked me to uninstall, which I did!

I also have History Kill (and Popup killer) running, which is Swanksoft, the same crowd as Spykiller. Any danger or problem with it?

Sorry for all the muddle, and thanks again!

Your log looks clean, must be a ping issue. Try resetting it by going to "Run", typing in the following, and pressing "Enter":

netsh int ip reset mynetsh.log

I don't suggest using msconfig to disable startup items. Msconfig only marks those files not to run on startup, doesn't even delete them. HiJackThis completely deletes the unneeded files. Spykiller is an unreliable and dangerous program. That's why I asked for its uninstallation. Here are just the latest reviews form Download.com:

http://download.com....4-10276387.html

HistoryKill on the other hand is a wonderful program, nice find :D. Rated a 5 out of 5 by Download.com and approved by 97% of its users:

http://download.com....tml?tag=lst-0-2

You will need to manually delete the "Spykiller" folder because the uninstaller didn't, like I said "unreliable". To manually delete it, reboot in safe mode (by tapping F8 at startup and select safe mode from the menu). Be sure you're able to view hidden files and folders, and remove the following files in bold:

C:\Program Files\HistoryKill\ <-- This Folder
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe <-- This File (realplayer spyware) It runs independent of RealOne Player, does not affect RealOnePlayer at all, only sends player usage statistics to Real, using your valuable system resources.

You may also want to fix these using HJT (if found):

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{17229DD7-F7F6-449C-BD15-7085FA73899B}: NameServer = 194.145.128.1 194.125.2.206
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\..\{17229DD7-F7F6-449C-BD15-7085FA73899B}: NameServer = 194.145.128.1 194.125.2.206

Restart, and post a new log. <_<

Startup Inspector is a good program to identify and remove uneeded programs from loading at startup. You can find it here: http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=11
