ok let me try to explain this... i just got done building a new computer... computer turns on fine but after about 2 min a red cpu led on the motherbord comes on.. so i was taking it as the cpu is overheating.. took of the heatsink and was looking at it and the bottom does not even have any thermal paste on it so i am thinking its not even touching the cpu... did i get the wrong heat sink for my chip???

Yup your right, you need to install some thermal paste. Without it, your CPU will overheat.
I suggest MX-2 thermal paste.
