when trying to recover pictures and music files from the xp HD using the vista HD i have major security isses and have to gain access to each file one at a time, is there any way to do this all at once?

You can take ownership of the folder that the files are in and apply ownership to all folders and subfolders beneath the one you replace the permissions on.
