Hi there.

I'm not the greatest with a computer but i believe i've managed to follow the steps you recommend before posting a hijack this log.

I have the About Blank bug on my computer. I don't know if it is a virus or if it is spyware, or what the difference is in any case, but i heard that after a while this thing can really cause you problems.

I'll post my log here and would be very grateful for any advice you can give me that would help me get rid of About Blank.

Hi Jocko,

Please print out these instructions to make it easy to follow and to have access to them when you have to reboot your pc. Please read through them prior to commencing to do anything and if there is anything that you are unsure of, or do not understand, please contact me first for assistance.

Please create a new folder on your Cdrive (for example C\HJT) install Hijackthis into that folder and run it from there. That way it can create backups if required.

Press Control-Alt-Del to enter the Task Manager.

Click on the Processes tab and end the following processes:

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
Exit the Task Manager when finished.

I would like you to carry out the following free on-line virus scan and follow their instructions on removal of anything that it may find.

Panda Active Scan

Next please download the following two programs. Install them and update them both. Then run each one and have them fix anything that they may find.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3

Ad-aware S E 1.5

Open up HJT and rescan and Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake. Some of them might not be there as they will have been removed in previous stages of the sequence. This is normal so do not be alarmed

Ensure no windows are open apart from HJT and click FIX CHECKED.

Download the following program.

Cleanup

Reboot into SAFE MODE by tapping the F8 key whilst PC starts up.

Set PC to show hidden files (Click link below if you do not know how

Show hidden files

Using Windows Explorer locate and delete the following files/folders.

C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
c:\ied_s7.cab
c:\x.cab

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.[/b]

Now use the Cleanup program to clear out temp files, junk etc.

Reboot normally and rescan with HJT and post the log in this thread

Hi Jocko,

What exactly are you experiencing with your PC?

from your hjt log there is no evidence of about.blank infection.

Please run the following program and post the log back in this thread.

Silent Runners
Unzip it to a permanent folder.
Start SilentRunners.vbs
When your antivirus is giving an alert, do not block this. Allow the script.
Copy and paste the content of the txtfile you get afterwards in your next reply.

Hi again.

I noticed that after i set the PC to show hidden files that when i then searched for the files to delete, it seemed to be saying it wasn't searching hidden files. I manged to delete the first two files on the list tho. I guess this might be significant?

Sorry, i forgot to say in response to your query on the nature of my prob : i open up the Internet and i get a blank page with about blank written in the URL. The computer is slow to start and start up boxes vanish from time to time. I can still connect and am not too incovenienced, only worried about what this thing might do tomy computer.

Hi Jocko,

The about.blank page you get on startup is not an about blank infection, my own browser starts up with that, and i'm certainly not infected

With regards to your PC been slow to start, that can depend on many things, more than likely you will have a few things starting up on your computer startup.

If you click START/RUN and type msconfig then click the startup tab, you can disable things that you do not require at startup by unchecking them.

Also carry out some routine maintenance such as defrag your hard drive.

As i said in my prior post,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

You couldn't have been more helpful, many thanks! The problems i was having with the computer all seemed to start with this about blank page suddenly appearing on my homepage in place of the usual one.

Anyway, the upshot of it all is that i've got rid of the about blank page, which i had assumed was this about blank virus i always hear about.

Re the slowness of the computer etc i'll do as you suggested and get rid of a lot of the stuff i've downloaded to get rid of viruses as i suspect that may be part of the problem.

Thanks again. I really appreciate your time and effort. I also know a LOT more about computers than i did before!
