Forgot to add, you could also create a bootlog, this might give you a better idea of why it takes so long to boot up. Easiest way to do this in XP, is use a bootlog analyser. The link below is for a XP boot analyser (demo) if you want to try that.

Which things are slowing down the startup process? Is there one thing in particular, such as a driver, or is everything generally slow?

The things which appear to be taking the most time are :

htpatch - SIS chipset patch, you need this so can't do much about this one
All the Symantec (Nortons) software - What Nortons is loading 5 million things at start up? What a surprise! NOT! Personally, I reckon Symantec is a pile of poo but if you want to use it, then these files need to be there.

Paperport - this can go. Just start your scanner software manually when you need to use it.

Basically, most of it is Nortons. Theres several instances of svchost.exe running, this is normal but if you want to see what services each instance of svchost is starting, then go to the run command & type :

tasklist /svc >c:\tasklist.txt

Then open the text file & have a look.

If you want to be sure that it is nortons thats slowing the machine down, run msconfig, go to start up tab & disable every symantec entry in there & reboot.
Don't go on the net or do anything once you've rebooted, just see if it makes the bootup process quicker.
Then go back to msconfig & re-enable all the symantec entries & reboot.
