unwanted automatic quote marks before capital letter

Have a bizarre problem. "Quote marks automatically insert themselves when typing capital letters and shift characters (see beginning and end of this sentence)"! Happens very frequently, but not every time. Using Mac OS 10.4. "Anyone heard of this thing? Ron.
