Hello People Who Know More Than Me,

I am thankful for your very presence.

Setup: Windows XP, Zone Alarm and AVG Firewall (and now AVG antivirus and SuperAntiSpyware) running with cable internet connection

Issues: I first noticed "stuttering" with internet streaming media (YouTube clips, radio shows, etc.). I checked my DVD and CD/mp3 play and they also were choppy. Soon after my computer slowed way down, most notably during start up and shut down, but also running slower all around.

What I did: I defragged the hard drive, I scanned with AdAware and Spybot, and I checked all my Windows and hardware/driver updates. Then, I ran everything from the You Must Read This post here.

Result: I rebooted and it's running noticeably faster, but still slow, and the audio/DVD stuttering is still happening.

Hijack This log, Panda scan log, and Uninstall log below.

Thank you ever so much,
A.

Hi,

I don't think your issue is malware related though.

From what I see, you have Zonealarm present and I know Zonealarm may cause these issues.
Also, since Zonealarm bundles the Ask toolbar since recently, I do not recommend Zonealarm anymore. The free version of Zonealarm is not that great either.
That's why I suggest you uninstall Zonealarm + ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker via Software > add/remove programs.
Reboot afterwards.

let me know if that solved your problem.

Thanks for the reply. I uninstalled Zonealarm and Zonealarm Spyblocker and rebooted. I sort of hated that toolbar anyhow...

To my surprise, the computer is actually running a lot slower and the stuttering is still happening. I rebooted a few times to be sure. Zone Alarm is gone, but it's running as slow as it was before I did all of the things recommended to do before posting.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Also, I was reading in the forums here:

http://www.geekstogo...o...&hl=stutter

I checked my Primary IDE Channel in the Device Manager and found that Device 0's Current Transfer Mode is set to PIO. The others (for Devices 0 and 1) are set to DMA modes.

Should I follow the instructions in the linked post?

Thanks!

yes please :)

I was going to "tell" you the same thing anyway in case above instructions didn't work. I was going to post my "personal slow computer" troubleshooting page where the same solution is present (below): http://users.telenet...owcomputer.html

In anyway, it's good you got rid of Zonealarm anyway - it is known that it causes a huge system slowdown and other issues in general.
And it wouldn't be the first time that Zonealarm was responsible to change that setting. (however, zonealarm actually doesn't change it, but because it may cause a corrupted install, settings, whatever, that's why it was changed to PIO instead)
Also the fact that, you installed Zonealarm recently (since it has the Toolbar bundled recently as well) says more than enough.

let me know if above instructions made a difference. :)

Changing the setting worked beautifully, and things are working fine now.

I had installed Zonealarm quite a while before, and hadn't associated the update (with the toolbar) with the screwy computer behavior.

I can't thank you enough. Just FYI, the guy I chatted with at my computer's online help desk about this problem (a desperate move on my part...I never really trust them) told me I'd have to do a full system restore in order to correct the problem. Naturally I balked at the idea--I knew there had to be an easier answer, and ta-da! There was.

Thanks again! :)

Good to hear that solved your issue.

It's a pity to see that many of these so called experts always recommend a system restore or even a format and reinstall while it's not really needed.
Maybe you should give him the link to my "slow computer page" :)
Just simple instructions that work :)

If you need another firewall, check my "Firewalls" link below in my signature.
But, I have to be honest here, even the Firewalls I recommend may cause some issues on certain systems, so in case you're having problems with one of the firewalls I recommend (only install one!), uninstall it again and try another one.
But, as I said, in general, I do NOT recommend Zonealarm anymore. The free version is poor anyway and the fact it bundles now the ASK Toolbar - is just a pity.
