On starting up windows 2000 my sons computer has an error message saying the file p2esocks_1014.dll file is missing. The screen then turns blue and the antivirus program disactivates. Can you please help, thanks?

The log is:

Download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Print out these instructions.

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check the following and then Fix
Checked.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\DOCUME~1\WINDOW~1\CONFIG~1\Temp\se.dll/spage.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = about:blank

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Start, Run, then type:

del /q c:\windows\prefetch\*.*

and OK.

(Same as before with _ in place of space to make it easier to see. )

del _ /q _ c:\windows\prefetch\*.*

Reboot into normal mode and let's see how we did.

Thanks Ron. I got on OK until typing "del /q c:\windows\prefetch\*.*" and it said that it wasn't the correct route?

I wonder if they changed something in SP2? This used to work.

Start, Run, then type:
cmd
then OK. This should bring up a DOS type window.

then try :

cd \windows
attrib -h prefetch
cd prefetch
attrib -h *.*
del /q *.*

Does the above work? If not, where does it fail?

If you can't get the prefetch to clear then let it go and reboot and run a new scan.

DUUUH!. I just realized you have Win2K. You don't have a prefetch. Sorry. My fault. Got in a hurry and copied from my standard post and should have deleted that part.

Got rid of the p2esocks missing file message. Got the antivirus program to stay active but the desktop still turns dark blue and fatal error in IE appears at the bottom - but everything seems to work OK. Anything else I can do?
Thanks for your help!

We are making progress then.

Run HijackThis again and check/Fix Checked the following:

O2 - BHO: ST - {9394EDE7-C8B5-483E-8773-474BF36AF6E4} - C:\Archivos de programa\MSN Apps\ST\01.02.3000.1001\en-xu\stmain.dll

O3 - Toolbar: McAfee VirusScan - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - c:\archiv~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshl.dll
O3 - Toolbar: MSN - {BDAD1DAD-C946-4A17-ADC1-64B5B4FF55D0} - C:\Archivos de programa\MSN Apps\MSN Toolbar\01.02.3000.1001\es-la\msntb.dll
O3 - Toolbar: @msdxmLC.dll,-1@3082,&Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINNT\System32\msdxm.ocx

This is all stuff that loads when IE does so may cause the problem. They are all supposedly good but perhaps corrupt. They will not be removed permanently. HijackThis will save them in a folder called Backups and you can restore them later if you want them back by Config then Backups then select the one you want and Restore.

You can also try:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

and also

Start, Run, cmd,OK then type:

sfc /scannow

Rereading your post I wonder if they have turned on web content on your desktop and put up a phony page.

Open the Control Panel.
Open Display Properties.
Click the Web tab in the Display Properties window.

To disable Active Desktop, make sure that "Show Web content on my Active Desktop" is unchecked.
