Try using a different browser. I had similar issues with Opera and switched to Firefox for my Java applications. Otherwise, you can try uninstalling Java or your browser and do a clean reinstall.

The recommended RAM for XP OS is at least 1GB, with only 500MB it is bound to be slow. Try increasing your RAM first.

Another thing, I used to play this, when you go to select the high/low settings there's an bar at the bottom of the web page, you can try different java versions. You may want to experiment with that. Aside from that, definitly look into upgrading your RAM to atleast a minimum of 1GB.

This game sucks anyways. Jagex is launching a new game soon because of the epic failure Runescape brought!
Eightrealms is their new game, it's upcoming. Now out yet.

There is a cpu usage feature built into the game.

There's a new setting in the display options menu for CPU usage, so you can set how much of your computer's CPU resources are available to RuneScape. You may have to test it out to see which setting works best for your setup.

Try lowering and then running the game first.

Also what browser are you using?
