I have a similar problem to quinncx, except that when in regedit under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, it lacks a .exe folder altogether. I have already atempted to re-install windows, but I cannot run CD's because it brings up a window asking what i program i want to run it with. I also tried to bring up the volume control, but i could not bring it up either through the control panel or system tray. When I brought it up through control panel, it asked what I wanted to run rundll32.exe with. If there is anymore information that would be required, just let me know. I appreciate all your time and effort in advance.

Hello glhmk...

I've moved your request to a new topic to avoid confusion.

If you are missing the .exe key and subkeys in the registry, I have to wonder how many others may be missing. In your situation, I would recommend running this Repair to your installation. This will require that you have an XP installation cd and a valid product key. Once completed, you will have to run the Windows Update feature to bring the operating system back up to date.
