I resorted to a wireless keyboard/mouse and an external cd/dvd player, but it's very frustrating to have it shut down even if I just adjust the screen position. Any solution besides an expensive repair job? Thank you.

First thing I would do (if there is no extended warranty) is remove the covers on the back, the one over the HD and RAM ... all of them actually, just to make sure everything is in place and not loose.
Do you have any experience opening up a laptop?
You could easily have a serious problem like "something cracked" but it's also possible something is just loose.

No experience opening up a laptop or extended warranty. I did take the screws out, but the covers didn't want to come off.

You might want to check around your area and find a shop with experience opening up laptops and take it in.
