Your new task for me reminds me another problem of our crazy computer: it doesn't let me set a restore point-meaning I can't make any restore. Here is my HiJackthis log.

I am attaching a registry fix to restore updates. Download and Unzip then right click and select merge. Reboot and let me know if that has worked

Hi Essexboy,

I can not complete this one. I unzip it and right click but couldn't find "merge".

Hi I wrote this yesterday but couldn't open the geekstogo page anymore. I waited until 11pm and gave up. So I am posting this the first thing in the morning.

Hi Essexboy,

I did a few things and want to report to you in case they matter on your instructions to me.

Remember I told you I couldn’t do the new task “updaterestore.zip” as I couldn’t find “merge button”? Somehow it worked. I check the Security Center after I thought I couldn’t run it. And the “windows updated” was turn back on and could do the Automatic update now. I was very happy about it.

As I got a message from AVE Anti-Spyware that there was some malware as I mentioned in the previous post. I decided to run a quick scan again, and it found a “Medium Risk Threat-TrackingCookie.2o7”. I chose to remove it.

I was wondering if all our efforts in the past 2 days will do the same on all the user accounts. Then I log in with my husband’s user name. The first thing I found out on his account I still got that annoying Ox8DDD0003 message when I tried the windows update. I then download that “updaterestore.zip” on his side of the computer. The problem was fixed after I run it.

However, I feel something is not right on my husband’s account. It runs slower. It takes longer time to open one page. His home page (google.com) will not open the first time. I had to refresh the page. In fact this is my 2nd time to write this whole reply as I lost the page when I tried to do it on his account. I decided to run Super Anti-Spyware on his account (not knowing anything better to do). It found “Adware.TrackingCookie[8 items]”. I chose to remove them.

I wonder now if I should repeat everything we have done on my husband’s account? That would be a big pain! I would think the whole computer would be cured! I really hate being extra work for you. But I think we save those questions on my husband’s account for later. I do have a couple of things on my account I need to figure out:
1. I still can’t remove some programs like “quicktime”
2. I can’t make system restore to a certain time point. The earliest it can go is Jan 4th 2008. I am not sure if that is normal.

Thank you very much for your patience. I apologize if some of my questions are silly.

I can’t make system restore to a certain time point. The earliest it can go is Jan 4th 2008. I am not sure if that is normal.

That may well be because the amount of space allocated to system restore is full - in which case each time you add one the oldest will drop off

Adware.TrackingCookie[8 items]”.

Not a problem you will allways get them

However, I feel something is not right on my husband’s account. It runs slower. It takes longer time to open one page. His home page (google.com) will not open the first time. I had to refresh the page. In fact this is my 2nd time to write this whole reply as I lost the page when I tried to do it on his account. I decided to run Super Anti-Spyware on his account (not knowing anything better to do). It found “Adware.TrackingCookie[8 items]”. I chose to remove them.

Could you post a hijackthis log from that account

I still can’t remove some programs like “quicktime”

Why can't you uninstall it ?

OK whilst you are doing that I feel a wash and brush up is in order, run this from the administrator account. Your second log looks OK at the moment

Prefetch is clickable for more information

Click start then run, type prefetch then press enter, click edit then select all, (all files will highlight), right click any file, click delete, confirm

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run disc clean up

Reboot

Click start then all programmes, accessories, system tools to run defragmenter

Download, install and run
Tune Up 2007 Trial

Run Tune Up disc clean up

Run Tune Up registry clean up

Disable the anti virus programme then click Optimize and Improve to run Reg Defrag, the screen will lose colour during the process which can take a few minutes and then needs a reboot

Check the anti virus programme is running

Those will have cleared the drive of obsolete software errors

These are suggestions for making the most of the free trial

Click optimize and improve then system optimizer to optimize the computer, select computer with an internet connection from the drop down menu, this also requires a reboot

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to accelerate downloads, select the speed just above your actual connection speed, this requires a reboot.

After the reboot, click optimize then system optimizer to run system advisor

Here is another silly question: How do I get in to Administrator account? We have two accounts. One is called husband, the other is wife. I know there is "Administrator" user name when I run the computer in safe mode. Shall I go safe mode then?

Not imperative to go to admin as one of your accounts (probably the first one created ) will have the requisite permissions

OK I will do it from "husband" since I believe he created his user name first.

Also when I tried to uninstall Qicktime. I got this: The following file does not exit or it not a valid uninstallation log file. C:\WINDOWS\system32\QUICK~1\UNINST~1.LOG

I am running defragmenter now. It is going very very slow now. How do I un-install Quick time? Shall I just go to there website and download it? Can I do this when the defragmenter is running? It is going to take forever.

Defragmenting the drive will be quicker after it has been done for the first time :)

Download and install quicktime from here then you will be able to uninstall it :) http://www.apple.com/downloads/

Sorry to confuse you. I didn't know Quick time is from Apple :)

I just followed your link and downloaded the Quicktime and installed and a new icon comes up instead of taking over the old one in Add or Remove Programe. I could un-install the new one but still couldn't get rid of the old one. The same message came up again when I tried to remove the old one. If it is not harmful to our computer I guess I could put up with it. It is just annoying when I have to see that icon all the time on the right bottom of the computer.

Can you right click the icon and open the programme from there. Then under preference select do not start with computer. Also do you know what folder all the programme data is stored in i.e C:\program files\ apple or quicktime or something like that

No the confusion was me trying to decide if what I had said made sense
