I've always been rather frustrated at msn because it has like a limit on how many characters you can put into one message. Is there a way to eliminate this cap?

I'm running Windows Live Messenger version 8.1 (8.1.0178.00)

This is a built-in part of the program, and the limit is imposed for probably technical reasons.
You'll probably find if you can circumvent it, you'll probably not get into MSN anymore.
Easy solution is don't type so much in one go and spread it over two or more messages. :)
