I am having problems with a system freeze, ever since I tried to install the most recent Win updates: a security update KB936960 (Office 2007 Security update) and the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack SP1 update. I attempted the updates even though I don’t have Ofc2007, as it was asking to do them, and since I have installed the Office Converter Pack (thought that it might want to do them because of that.)

Now my XP Pro SP2 will boot, reluctantly and slowly – sometimes. And then freezes anywhere from 30 sec. To 5 min. after the desktop opens.

I’m typing this in Safe Mode, and have been running in Safe Mode for over an hour now with no problems.

When I do a scan of installed updates, hotfixes, etc, neither of the recent updates shows up, and in my MS Update history, they show as “cancelled” not as “failed”.

I have read the “Repair Windows…” post in the forum, and have so far:

Done multiple System Restores
Done a Disk Cleanup, including removing old SysRestore points
Defragged
Cleaned out ‘prefetch’ - twice
Run sfc /scannow
Run chkdsk /f /r

What is odd is that all of the above was done in Windows, not Safe Mode, and it let me do it. But when I open a regular program or IE6 or Firefox, it will still freeze shortly thereafter.

I’m hoping there is a way to fix this without yet another clean install…

The problem I have with a lot of the repair fixes I’ve seen, is that they require the XP OS disk, and I’ve got these darn “System Recovery” disks from HP (I’m on a Pavilion dv6000 laptop, so it’s OEM). It looks like all I can do with them is reinstall Windows, which is going to mean reinstalling all the other 3rd party software, right?

And the week or so required to reconfigure it all and reload my data.

Is all this clear (kinda)? Can you help?

Since it works better in Safe Mode, try the following:

First, physically disconnect from the Internet to prevent a malware infection while your Anti-virus and/or Firewall are disabled in the following steps, then do a normal (not Safe Mode) boot:

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab and disable everything (I mean everything).
Do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, click on the Services tab. Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.

Reconnect to the Internet when your AV and firewall are active again.
