Ok im trying to fix a friends computer He had Windows Xp on it and it suddenly stopped working and would ask him for a windows cd or something. His brother tried to fix it by installing Vista He tells me that the vista install worked for a few days But Now it wont get past the startup screen before the Pc reboots by itsself.

I have a Windows Xp sp2 Install cd that Im using But I only get as far as the screen where you select the partition to delete. When I try to make a choice I get a blue error screen.

So I made a boot Cd and ran Scandisk with no errors on the hardrive, then I ran DELPART and deleted the partitions and saved then rebooted.

I put the Windows Xp sp2 cd in and the same thing is happening and Its still showing Partitions.

So I ran DELPART again and it isnt showing any partitions.

I also Hooked up an old harddrive I had lying around and the pc runs fine with it.

Can some one PLease help me? I promised my friend I would fix it for him.

The reality is this looks like you have a bad sector in the boot section of the hard drive. Most of the time a problem like this is not fixable and a new hard drive should be bought.

In a few cases it is not a real problem with the hard drive, but the boot sector was corrupted. Depending on what kind of bootable CD you have you could always try fdisking and formatting the drive as Fat 32. You could make a 30 gig partition that can be made active and then try using a XP cd to install the OS on it. You could then at the same time of after reinstalling XP format the rest of the drive as a second partition. The ultimate Boot CD has the utilitys from most of the hard drive makers that you could use to do a format on the drive.

A second method is to use another computer and install the drive in it as a slave drive and format it with disk management. If the drive has problems being able to format it in another computer, the drive probably is dying and should be replaced.

Hey thanks for the Answer I also though It was a bad HDD But I ran SCANDISK Off a bootdisk with absoluty no errors then CHKDSK and still no errors then I said what the [bleep] and I went to the drives website and downloaded their Scanning tool made for that hard drive AND STILL NO ERRORS???? I've went through about 10 cd-rs so far making bootdisks.

I Did Try Fdisking and Formating But nothing has changed


The Error I get while Im trying to select a partition in the windows installation is as follows:

Its Weird that when I put another HDD in with windows ME installed everything ran fine.

A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler didn’t catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues (which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

I am wondering if you need to do the "F6 thing" to install SATA hard drive drivers on your computer. I would check to see if it is a SATA HD.

Ok I managed to Update the BIOS and that didnt fix it so now Im almost positive I need to get the RAID drivers installed some how doing the F6 thing BUT>>>>
I cant hook up a [bleep] floppy to this pc that I know of because theres no slot to plug the floppy IDE cable into & setup only boots from the floopy drive.

So Im stuck!!!!

Im trying to look into Splistreaming the drivers into an Xp install cd but Im sooooooooo lost I need the directions dumbed down alot for me to figure it out.

Personally i have found that Acronis True Image will let you save a OS system that already has the SATA drivers installed to a DVD so you can install it again if the system gets borked.
