;)

g'day,

the smitfraud wallpaper and about four dialers/pop-ups infected my pc yesterday. i think i have managed to clean a lot of house, but i am stumped.

i run norton antivirus, cwshredder and stinger - still persists.

the blue screen with the 'trojan-spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c' appears to have gone, but pops up when i am shutting down/starting up. my properties menu when right clicking on the desktop is missing some tabs - i cannot set my wallpaper.

an error message saying that MAD has caused an invalid page fault in the module NETWOAK.TXT comes up on startup.

my home page is constantly reset to:
www.81.222.131.49/index.php

i have deleted a lot of things from the registry/ c drive and all my temporary internet files folders (having checked out some most excellent advice on other threads).

this is my hijack this report:

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

http://www.iup.edu/h...net/winfix.shtm

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.

Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC
maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check then Fix
Checked the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sp.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sp.html

Wait 60 seconds and repeat the scan. Did any of the above come back? IF so
leave HijackThis up and right click on the clock and select Task Manager. Then
Processes. Find Explorer.exe, right click on it and select End Process. The
desktop will disappear but HijackThis should still be there. IF you don't see
it switch to Applications in Task Manager and highlight it there then press
Switch To or just double click on it. Check and Fix Checked the above again.
Restart Explorer by Task Manager, File, New Task(Run), explorer.exe, OK.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Reboot into normal mode and run another HijackThis log and post it. Let's
see how we did.

Forgot the how to fix the wallpaper part. Do this after you stop wp.exe from running:

Start, Run, regedit, OK to bring up the regedit program.

find HKey_Current_User->Software ->Microsoft->Windows->CurrentVersion>policies (Hit the + sign in front of each Key as you find them. That will open up the subkeys.)

Under Policies is usually an entry named System. If you find it highlight it and press the Delete key. Then OK. Close the program and reboot.

Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My Active Desktop as a web page. OK

ron - all seems well. the wallpaper returned and seems no trace of the virus. you beauty!

i still cannot log onto the net though. it all dials up ok, verifies my username and password, but then says 'unable to connect to remote computer'. error680 (?) or something like that. i have no trouble logging onto the same logon using the computer i am on now though. i checked internet properties and the homepage was about:blank or something like that.

what do you reckon?
