Hello, I have an older dell computer with windows xp operating system. My problem is when I log on to windows in any name my background screen will come up but, no icons, no taskbar, no startbutton. I have tried to right click everywhere on the desktop and nothing happens. The only thing that will come up is when I press ctrl alt delete. The task manager shows up and no applications are shown. I need someone to help me solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

This is a problem associated with a lot of malware. What's happening is that explorer.exe isn't loading.

Open the Task Manager, and click "New Task". Type "explorer.exe" without the quotes and press enter.

Then if that works, click the first link after the text "Have a malware problem?" in my signature. Follow the instructions there to post a HijackThis log for analysis.

I just tried typing explorer.exe as a new task and a gray box came up saying that explorer.exe cannot be found. Any ideas why this is happening?

NOTE: We do not look at hijack this logs in this forum. It is done where you posted it.
I am not a hijack this specialist, but you have a lot of files that have weird names. I do suspect malware and spyware/ virus as already stated.

Did you do any/ attempt to do any of the prep work prior to the log?
You must "attempt" to do the prep. If you can't, you must let them know. This is for your benefit so they have a place to start.

Please go back to that forum and get the clean bill of health from them

Please be patient, they are quite busy.

So am I. I'm afraid I can't pick any more logs than I have right now, or else I'd get yours. Sorry :)

The explorer.exe error is probably due to registry corruption, if it's still like that after the staff is through with you please post back here.
