The message:" A fatal error in IE has occurred at 0028:C0011E36 in VXS CMM<01>00010E36.
Updated Windows XP
Updated and ran Macafee
Installed and ran, updated and reran Spyware Doctor
Updated and ran Nortons Anti virus 2004
Followed Norton's directions through registry edit.
Deleted C:\wp.bmp
Downloaded Hijack This and here's the log.
Can"t access Desktop background settings...unknown what else is out there

Start, Control Panel, Display Properties, Web and uncheck the box that says: Show Web Content on my Active Desktop. Then OK. That might clean up your desktop a bit.


Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe before you do anything. This is just a safety
item in case you can't get on the internet afterwards. You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

Also download and install ccleaner.exe from http://www.ccleaner.com. Don't let
it clean anything yet.



Now shutdown and reboot into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you see the PC maker's logo.
Keep tapping until it tells you it is going to Safe Mode or you see the Safe
Mode menu. Select the top option.

Run HijackThis and just do a Scan only. Check the following and then Fix
Checked.

Now run ccleaner.exe. On the first page, uncheck everything but the two lines
that have the word Temporary in them then Run Cleaner.

Reboot and run HijackThis again and post the log and let's see how lucky we are.

No sign of improvement.
Did as directed ...took 2 delete runs in Hijack to clear the designated files. Here's the revised log

You may not see an improvement in your original problem but the bugs are gone from your log files.

I think what you need to do now is two things:

1. Find a .bmp and copy it to C:\ as wp.bmp

I think your system uses IE to run the desktop and the file it wants to use is missing which is annoying it.

2. Start, Run, regedit, OK and navigate down to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

If you see a key System under it then highlight it and delete it and any subkeys or values. It should not be there and was added by the bug.

You might want to make a backup of the registry before you make the change or better yet make it with regseeker which will make a backup for you and help you if you need to restore it.

We both went looking in the right place.
I went in to edit the registry file looking for c:\wp.bmp. Found it in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and deleted it. System seems to be funtioning ok.
FYI, Nortons had me delete "NoDispBackgroundPage"="1" and "NoDispAppearance"="1"in that same subkey. I will go back in and remove the System Subkey.

I've learned a little more about this beast since my original post:

After you delete the system key:

Reboot.


Start, Control Panel, Display (Properties). This should bring up Display Properties/Background. Change the wallpaper to something else and Apply. You may also need to select Web and uncheck the box where it says View My Active Desktop as a web page. OK
