Hello,

My printer, Brother MFC-5460CN is on the network, connected to my laptop through wireless router and cable modem. My OS is Windows XP professional.

I am unable to scan directly using the scan button on the control panel of the printer. Everytime I try to scan, the little LCD screen on the printer says "connecting to PC" and then goes back to sleep. A little window pops up on my PC stating "unable to connect to the device". I visited the Brother website at the following location that described the problem just as mine: http://welcome.solut...d=mfc5460cn_all

and followed their suggestions step by step but it didn't work. It basically involved disabling the windows firewall and also try to add a port to the exception list of the Windows firewall.

Could I get some help in this regard, because I want to be able to scan directly from my printer by pressing the scan button. I am certainly not good with resolving network issues.

Thanks a lot.

PS: I am able to scan by commanding from my laptop using the software.

your router may be the culprit, but i doubt it... is there any way to get the printers little LCD to give you detailed error messages rather than just go back to sleep?

Hello,

thanks for the response. The LCD screen only says... "connecting to the PC" and then nothing happens meaning there is no detailed error message on the LCD panel. What happens is that if the windows firewall is turned off, then a error box pops up on my laptop stating that failed to connect to the device, after I have pressed the scan button on the printer. If my windows firewall is turned on, nothing pops up on my computer after pressing the scan button. :)

Thanks again
:)

with the firewall turned on windows is blocking incoming messages from the printer all together which is why you see nothing... but with the firewall off it can get through which is why you get the error box....

seems a two part problem... leave the firewall off and go back to the tech support site you went to and see if you can find an answer to your new problem...

(i hate not being more helpfull than this but ive never heard of this printer/scanner model let alone had any hands on experence)
