Computer wont boot without cd

ok i just got a cheap computer to muck around on and it wont boot into windows with the windows xp cd in the drive, it just says boot disk failure

not sure why this
the motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA69GM-S2H
the only new part on the computer
running a IDE hard drive, 2 gig of ram, 4600+ dual core

i have updated the bios from v2 to v4 but did nothing

if anyone can help be much obliged

Con Rod, what drive do you boot from? Are there multiple drives or partitions? Sounds like your C: drive is missing any/all of the following required files:

ntldr
ntdetect
boot.ini


These will be Read Only, Hidden, System files so you will have to go into Folder Options and do the following to see if they are there or not:

Click on View.
Select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck Hide extensions for know file types
Uncheck Hide protected operating system files

theres only one drive in there and only 1 partitions, new xp

so hard drive problem?

i was told to go into recovery console and type chkdsk /r and if that dont work fixboot??

will this work?

Won't know until you give it a try (chkdsk /r).

You didn't answer my questions about ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini. Did you check to see if they are in the root of C:?

It would still be useful for you to post the information from boot.ini.

Why are you trying to boot with the Xp disk? Can you boot "normally"?
