Doesn't sound like the install completed successfully. You should do it again only this time stick around to watch what happens. Boring I know but you need to see what happens if it hangs again.

This time you can just format the D: drive, no need to delete the partition and create a new one, though you can do that if you prefer.

500MB free on C: is going to be a problem I suspect and may be the cause of the hang. Even though you are installing to D: the install process is most likely writing some stuff to C: and is definitely updating the boot.ini on the C: drive.

Might be a good idea to offload some stuff from C: to CD/DVD to give yourself at least a gig of free space there. I may be wrong on this but it's something to think about.

I tried the installation from the very beginning again. At the blue screen thing when I boot from CD, after it's done copying files, it says "When your computer restarts, setup will continue. Press Enter to restart..." Something like that. When it restarts and I let it go without booting from CD, it shows the XP startup screen, then freezes forever, that's the same. If I boot to the CD it just says what it says if I never began the installation before.

Okay, IT WORKS!

I googled around and found this website: http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

I did what it suggested and replaced the XP update.sys in D: with the one from the C: drive, and everything went smoothly from there...
that might cause some problems in the future, but I guess I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Now I have a problem getting the Internet to work in XP...I cant get my comcast connection to work in XP, which seems to think I should be connected to the "old computer" to transfer settings and files when this IS the old computer, should I create a new thread for that?

I knew there were some issues involving SP2 and some AMD processors, but was unaware of the problem with the Intel prescott processors.
