WIndows Install can't find hard drive

I had to replace a broken HDD in my hp compaq nc6400 and when I try to run the wondows xp installation it tells me that Windows cannot find the hard drive. I have tried two different disks. Also the diagnostics say that the hard drive is there and functioning properly. Any ideas?
